Swissport Celebrates 30 Years Highlighting AI and Automation

Swissport Celebrates 30 Years with Focus on AI and Automation
Swissport is commemorating its 30th anniversary by reflecting on three decades of global expansion and a growing dedication to artificial intelligence, automation, and electrification within its ground services. Established on August 16, 1996, following its separation from Swissair, Swissport initially operated at Zurich, Geneva, and Basel airports. Today, the company supports approximately 850 airline customers across more than 300 airports in 49 countries.
Growth and Global Reach
The anniversary coincides with a record-breaking year in 2025, during which Swissport reported revenues of €3.9 billion, effectively doubling its turnover over the past five years. The company has broadened its operations in ground handling, cargo, and airport hospitality, employing around 63,000 people worldwide. Swissport’s extensive network manages roughly 4 million flights and serves 243 million passengers annually. Its cargo division processes 5.2 million tons of air freight through 126 warehouses globally.
Recent strategic expansions include entering the Chinese market at Shanghai Pudong Airport, increasing its presence to 16 airports in Saudi Arabia, and acquiring ASC in the United Kingdom in 2025. In Latin America, Swissport operates at 85 airports across 15 countries, underscoring its significant international footprint.
Technological Innovation at the Forefront
Technology plays an increasingly pivotal role in Swissport’s operational strategy. Through Swissport Labs, the company is advancing the development and deployment of AI, automation, robotics, and data analytics to enhance aircraft turnaround, fleet management, and passenger processing. Notable innovations include TurnSmart, an AI-powered camera system designed to optimize aircraft turnarounds, and AI-enabled dashboard cameras in North America, which have reduced operational incidents by 60% within six months.
Additional technological initiatives include SmartGSE, which tracks ground support equipment to boost efficiency, and OneKnowledge, an AI-driven platform providing multilingual operational support to employees. Swissport is also trialing autonomous ground support equipment, such as a fully autonomous baggage vehicle currently operating at Zurich Airport.
Electrification remains a key priority, with over 27% of Swissport’s global ground support equipment fleet now electric, positioning it as the operator of the world’s largest electric GSE fleet. In cargo operations, AI-enabled warehouse systems at Shanghai Pudong Airport can process up to 3,500 parcels per hour with 99.5% accuracy. Investments in cargo infrastructure at major airports including Manchester, Amsterdam, Sofia, Liège, and New York JFK are expanding capacity to meet growing demand for e-commerce and temperature-sensitive shipments.
Industry Challenges and Workforce Development
Swissport’s advancements in AI and automation occur amid a broader industry imperative to demonstrate clear returns on technology investments. In Switzerland and the wider DACH region, mid-market companies face mounting pressure to validate the tangible business benefits of AI, with 34% of Swiss SMEs having integrated AI into their operations. As competitors enhance their AI capabilities and digital marketing increasingly emphasizes measurable outcomes, Swissport and its peers operate in a competitive environment where performance metrics and demonstrable results are critical.
The company’s workforce completed over 2 million training sessions in 2025 through Swissport Academy, with a strong focus on health and safety. Looking forward, Swissport’s commitment to innovation, operational efficiency, and measurable impact is poised to define the next phase of its global development.
