Top Airlines Offering Premium Economy on Transatlantic Flights
Premium economy has emerged as a favored option for travelers seeking greater comfort than standard economy without the premium cost of business class. While lie-flat suites remain the benchmark for ultra-long-haul travel, premium economy is particularly sought after on transatlantic routes connecting the United States and Europe. In response to growing demand for enhanced comfort and value, airlines are increasingly refining their premium economy products to distinguish themselves in a competitive marketplace.
Differentiation in a Crowded Market
Unlike business class, where airlines often compete through bold cabin designs and innovative features, premium economy cabins tend to be more standardized. Nevertheless, carriers are striving to differentiate their offerings by focusing on comfort, service, and amenities to appeal to discerning travelers. The challenge lies in balancing competitive pricing with profitability, especially as fare promotions—such as recent sales by Air Arabia—underscore the intense competition within this segment.
Market dynamics are evolving as passengers seek better value in premium services. The expansion of premium economy cabins by airlines such as Etihad Airways and Emirates reflects this growing demand and the necessity for carriers to enhance their product offerings. Some airlines are responding by introducing new routes and upgrading premium economy perks, exemplified by the launch of services like the Gothenburg route and expanded premium economy options.
Standout Premium Economy Products
Lufthansa stands out as a leader in premium economy on transatlantic flights, offering the product on all its widebody aircraft. Most of its fleet features the ZIMmagic seat with 38 inches of pitch, but the airline distinguishes itself on the Airbus A350-900 by employing a seven-abreast configuration rather than the more common eight-abreast layout. This arrangement results in only one middle seat per row and wider seats measuring 19 inches compared to the standard 18.5 inches. The additional space and wider aisles significantly enhance comfort and facilitate better service flow on long-haul flights.
Lufthansa’s newest A350s, equipped with the Allegris cabin, continue this trend by featuring the ZIMPrivacy PC-02 fixed shell seat. These seats are among the widest in the industry at 19.5 inches and offer increased privacy, larger 4K screens, and USB-C charging ports. The same seat model is also installed on SWISS’s A350s and Lufthansa’s Boeing 787-9s, although the latter features slightly narrower seats due to the aircraft’s fuselage dimensions.
Air France has also made substantial investments in its premium economy product, offering it across all widebody aircraft. The airline utilizes the Safran Airgo FX fixed shell seat on its Airbus A330s, high-density Boeing 777-300ERs, and Boeing 787-9s, while other aircraft are equipped with Collins Aerospace Icon or Recaro PL3530 recliner seats. Air France is noted for its rapidly improving onboard cuisine and consistently high service standards, which further elevate the premium economy experience.
The Future of Premium Economy
As competition intensifies, airlines are expected to continue enhancing their premium economy cabins by adding new routes and improving onboard amenities. Passengers can anticipate a broader range of choices and better value as carriers seek to balance comfort, service quality, and pricing in this evolving segment of transatlantic air travel.
