United Airlines to Retire 80 Aircraft Ahead of Boeing 737 Max 10 Deliveries
United Airlines has announced plans to retire 80 older, less fuel-efficient aircraft in 2027 as it prepares to introduce its first Boeing 737 Max 10 jets, expected to begin arriving next year. This decision represents a significant increase in the airline’s annual retirements and forms part of a broader strategy to modernize its fleet, reduce operating costs, and enhance profit margins.
Fleet Modernization and Strategic Alignment
During the airline’s second-quarter earnings call on July 16, United’s Chief Financial Officer, Mike Leskinen, described the planned retirements as a notable escalation compared to previous years. The accelerated phase-out will facilitate a fleetwide cabin refresh and enable the airline to better align its capacity with market demand. United intends to implement a “barbell approach,” deploying newer, fuel-efficient aircraft on high-demand, profitable routes while restricting older planes with outdated cabins and higher operating costs to peak travel periods only. Leskinen emphasized that this strategy maximizes both profitability and return on invested capital by increasing the proportion of younger, more efficient aircraft in the fleet.
United anticipates taking delivery of up to 20 Boeing 737 Max 10 aircraft in 2027, with an additional 147 on order. The Max 10 model, featuring expanded premium seating, is slated to serve the airline’s most critical routes. Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella highlighted the aircraft’s superiority, stating, “The Max 10 will be superior in every way.”
Industry Context and Production Developments
United’s fleet renewal initiative coincides with similar moves by competitors. WestJet recently leased the first Boeing 737 Max 10, while Delta Air Lines has outlined plans to utilize both the 737 Max 10 and 787-10 models to drive efficient growth by replacing older, smaller aircraft. Boeing itself has ramped up production of the Max 10, inaugurating a new assembly line in Seattle and initiating its largest production shift since 1970 by commencing 737 manufacturing at its Everett facility. These efforts are part of Boeing’s push to secure Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification for the new model.
Cabin Upgrades and Connectivity Enhancements
In addition to fleet renewal, United is advancing a comprehensive cabin upgrade program. The airline reaffirmed its commitment to equipping 1,000 aircraft with SpaceX’s Starlink satellite Wi-Fi by the end of the year. Chief Executive Scott Kirby emphasized the importance of connectivity for premium customers, stating, “As fast as Starlink can produce the antennas for us, we’re going to get them on the airplane. For premium customers that really want to be able to make sure they’re connected with high speed, it is going to lead to big share gains for us.”
Further cabin improvements are underway, including increased premium seat capacity, upgraded seatback entertainment systems, and larger overhead bins, all expected to contribute to improved margins. Kirby noted that achieving United’s target operating margins in the “mid-teens” will require broader industry adjustments, particularly as some competitors continue to incur losses due to rising fuel costs. He observed, “They have an awful lot of flying that loses money on an individual route basis. One way or another, that gets resolved over time.”
