University of Nebraska at Kearney Launches Loper Flight Academy with Tecnam P-Mentors
The University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) has inaugurated the Loper Flight Academy at Kearney Regional Airport, marking a strategic shift from its previous reliance on contracted flight training to a fully university-operated program. Central to this new initiative is a fleet of seven Tecnam P-Mentor aircraft, acquired through a dry operating lease with WingsLeasing, finalized on May 12, 2026. The academy commenced operations on August 20, 2026, and is housed within the Nebraska Safety Center, under the full ownership and management of UNK.
Transition to an In-House Flight Training Model
This transition replaces the university’s earlier arrangement with American Flight Schools, which had been in place since 2021 under a five-year contract. Under that model, UNK faced annual price increases and was obligated to guarantee minimum monthly aircraft hours, even during periods of low utilization caused by weather or maintenance issues. By bringing flight training in-house, UNK aims to exercise greater control over both costs and program quality. According to Dan Smith, Aviation Program Director, the new model is expected to reduce aircraft training costs by approximately $15 per flight hour, potentially saving students around $3,180 across the Private Pilot, Instrument Rating, and Commercial Pilot stages.
The Loper Flight Academy now offers both FAA Part 141 and Part 61 training. Part 141 training is designed for students enrolled in UNK’s Professional Pilot degree program, while Part 61 training is available to community members seeking pilot certificates outside the university curriculum.
Fleet and Community Response
The academy’s fleet consists of seven Tecnam P-Mentor aircraft, two-seat, single-engine planes equipped for IFR, PBN/RNAV, and automated flight-control-system training. These aircraft are powered by the 100 hp Rotax 912iSc3 engine and received FAA Part 23 type certification in May 2024.
The launch has been met with positive reactions from the local community, as evidenced by engagement on social media platforms such as KSNB Local4’s Facebook page. Community members have expressed support for UNK’s investment in aviation education, though some have noted that the transition to an in-house model will require substantial investment in training and maintenance for the new fleet. The academy also faces competition from established flight schools in the region, and its long-term success will depend on its ability to attract students and forge partnerships with aviation businesses.
While market responses have been largely favorable, the reaction from competing institutions remains uncertain. The introduction of the Loper Flight Academy’s new offerings may prompt other regional flight schools to reevaluate their training programs and resources as the aviation education landscape in Nebraska continues to evolve.
