Drawing from his experience as a private pilot along the US East Coast, Sellouk noticed numerous private planes lined up at small airports, evoking memories of the black-car services that once waited outside luxury hotels before ride-sharing platforms like Uber revolutionized ground transportation. Sellouk explained to Aerospace Global News that Uber’s use of technology to democratize ride-sharing inspired him to apply a similar model to aviation. This insight led to the establishment of Flyte in 2018 as an on-demand regional air mobility company, aiming to bridge the gap between commercial airlines and private jet charters. Operational Model and Market Positioning Flyte currently operates a fleet of five Cirrus Vision Jet aircraft, providing commercial service within a 500-nautical-mile radius of New York. The company offers flights with a two-hour call-out window, typically available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. One-way fares average around $4,900, positioning Flyte as a more accessible alternative to traditional private aviation while catering to business travelers and others seeking efficient, point-to-point connections. While electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) developers such as Joby and Archer Aviation pursue ambitious visions of air taxis landing on city rooftops, Sellouk remains cautious about the near-term feasibility of widespread eVTOL deployment. He emphasized that his mission is to advance regional air mobility using proven conventional aircraft as a necessary precursor to the eventual integration of eVTOLs. “Realistically, I don’t see an eVTOL landing in Times Square anytime soon,” he remarked. Leveraging Existing Infrastructure and Ensuring Safety Flyte’s strategy capitalizes on underutilized regional airports, of which there are approximately 19,500 in the United States, though only about 400 currently handle commercial traffic. As regional airlines withdraw from smaller routes, Flyte aims to fill the void by offering reliable, on-demand service that connects less-served locations. Safety remains a cornerstone of Flyte’s offering. The Cirrus Vision Jet is equipped with the Airframe Parachute System, designed to safely lower the entire aircraft in emergencies, alongside an autonomous safe-return system capable of landing and taxiing the jet if the pilot becomes incapacitated. Challenges and Competitive Landscape Despite its innovative approach, Flyte faces significant challenges, including infrastructure development, regulatory complexities, and intensifying competition.
