VoltAero has unveiled the HPU 210, a hybrid-electric propulsion system tailored for homebuilt, kit-built, and very light propeller-driven aircraft. The announcement was made at the France Air Expo in Lyon, underscoring the company’s commitment to advancing sustainable aviation technologies. This new power unit represents a significant development in the pursuit of more efficient and environmentally friendly propulsion solutions for the light aircraft market.
Technical Specifications and Performance Capabilities
The HPU 210 combines a supercharged Kawasaki H2SX thermal engine with a 60 kW electric motor, delivering a total power output designed to improve aircraft performance during critical phases such as take-off and climb. The thermal engine generates 150 kW, while the electric motor adds an additional 60 kW, providing up to a 40% power boost when necessary. This hybrid configuration builds upon VoltAero’s established propulsion system used in the Cassio family of regional aircraft, which has logged over 185 flight hours and covered 25,000 kilometers on the Cassio S testbed.
The thermal engine, adapted from Kawasaki’s Ninja H2 SX sport motorcycle, has been modified for aviation use with features including electronic fuel injection and a projected time between overhaul (TBO) of 1,500 hours. The propulsion system supports multiple fuel types such as AVGAS, E85 biofuel, and unleaded automotive petrol, offering operators operational flexibility alongside cost efficiency and environmental advantages. Fuel consumption is reported to be as low as 38 litres per hour at cruise settings. The system is managed through a single throttle, with the thermal engine providing up to 70% of the power and the electric motor supplying supplementary thrust as required.
Production and Industry Significance
VoltAero is marketing the HPU 210 as a turnkey kit that encompasses the engine, electric motor, gearbox, and control systems. Bench testing has been successfully completed at AKIRA, a partner facility in southern France. Production is slated to occur at VoltAero’s Rochefort Airport facility in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, with initial deliveries expected by late 2026.
The launch of the HPU 210 represents a pivotal advancement in hybrid-electric propulsion for light aircraft. By combining enhanced efficiency, increased power output, and fuel versatility, VoltAero’s new system addresses the growing demand for sustainable and cost-effective solutions within the light aviation sector.
