Airline to Operate Largest Airbus A350 Fleet in 2025

Singapore Airlines to Operate World’s Largest Airbus A350 Fleet in 2025
Singapore Airlines is set to retain its status as the world’s largest operator of the Airbus A350 aircraft in 2025, building on its early adoption of the advanced widebody jet. Currently, the airline’s A350 fleet comprises 65 aircraft, with plans to expand to 72 as it takes delivery of new A350 freighters later in the decade. While other carriers have placed larger total orders for the A350, Singapore Airlines leads in the number of active aircraft in operation.
Fleet Composition and Strategic Choices
The airline’s A350 fleet consists exclusively of the -900 passenger variant, including the specialized -900ULR (Ultra Long Range) subvariant. Notably, Singapore Airlines has not ordered the larger A350-1000 model. This deliberate strategy allows the carrier to optimize range and operational flexibility across its network. Meanwhile, the forthcoming Boeing 777-9 will be deployed on routes requiring higher capacity and extended range.
According to data from Planespotters.net, Singapore Airlines operates 62 active A350-900s, with an additional three aircraft currently parked for maintenance. Of these, 58 are standard A350-900s, while seven are the -900ULR variant, designed specifically for the world’s longest non-stop commercial flights, such as the Singapore to New York route. The -900ULR is equipped with extra fuel tanks, enabling a maximum range of approximately 9,700 nautical miles and flight durations exceeding 18 hours. These aircraft feature a unique cabin configuration, offering 67 business class and 94 premium economy seats, with no economy class, to enhance passenger comfort on ultra-long-haul journeys.
Singapore Airlines is also the launch customer for the A350F freighter, having placed an order for seven aircraft. However, deliveries of these freighters have been delayed until 2027. Overall, the airline’s mainline fleet totals 156 aircraft, with the A350-900 representing about 42 percent of this number. The carrier maintains a strong focus on widebody operations, operating only 19 Boeing 737 narrowbodies, while its low-cost subsidiary Scoot manages a separate fleet of 59 aircraft, including 39 narrowbodies.
Operational Challenges and Competitive Landscape
Operating the world’s largest A350 fleet presents both opportunities and challenges for Singapore Airlines. The airline must sustain operational efficiency amid evolving industry dynamics, including potential delays in the Boeing 777X program, which could affect competitor strategies and market conditions. The competitive environment is intensifying, with airlines such as Malaysia Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines expanding their own A350 fleets. Malaysia Airlines is undertaking a fleet renewal, while Ethiopian Airlines has placed additional orders for the A350-900, moves that may prompt further strategic responses within the sector.
Singapore Airlines’ market position may also be influenced by how competitors manage operational disruptions, such as American Airlines’ recent challenges during an Airbus recall amid peak travel periods. As the A350 becomes increasingly central to global long-haul operations, Singapore Airlines’ ability to adapt and execute its fleet strategy will be critical to maintaining its leadership.
With its extensive and modern A350 fleet, Singapore Airlines continues to set a high standard for long-haul travel, even as the competitive and operational landscape continues to evolve.
