Aviator Signs Multi-Year Ground Handling Agreement with China Southern Airlines

Aviator and China Southern Airlines Forge Multi-Year Ground Handling Partnership at Helsinki Airport
Aviator Airport Alliance, a prominent Nordic aviation services provider and subsidiary of Avia Solutions Group, has formalized a multi-year ground handling agreement with China Southern Airlines at Helsinki Airport (HEL). This collaboration coincides with China Southern’s inaugural flight connecting Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) to Helsinki, which commenced on March 29.
Scope of the Agreement and Strategic Significance
Under the terms of the agreement, Aviator will provide a full suite of ground handling services for China Southern at Helsinki, encompassing passenger and baggage handling, ramp operations, and aircraft de-icing. This partnership represents a strategic milestone for both entities, as China Southern seeks to broaden its international reach through the new Helsinki route.
China Southern Airlines, established in 1988, ranks among the world’s largest carriers, operating a fleet of nearly 900 aircraft and serving over 200 destinations worldwide. With a daily flight volume exceeding 2,000, the airline maintains a significant presence in both regional and long-haul markets. The introduction of the Helsinki service forms part of China Southern’s broader initiative to strengthen its foothold in the European aviation sector.
Industry Context and Operational Challenges
The agreement emerges amid a complex operational environment for Asia-Pacific carriers. The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) has underscored ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region, including restricted airspace availability and escalating jet fuel costs linked to the Middle East conflict. These factors have intensified pressures on airlines’ operational expenditures and route management strategies. Despite these challenges, China Southern has recently returned to profitability and is advancing plans to expand its fleet, incorporating additional Airbus A350 aircraft alongside domestically produced C919 jets. The competitive landscape remains rigorous, with other major Chinese airlines such as China Eastern Airlines also contending with profitability hurdles.
Minna Virmajoki, Interim Managing Director of Aviator Finland, emphasized the significance of the partnership, stating, “With the new agreement now in place, we look forward to supporting China Southern Airlines’ presence in Helsinki and ensuring a smooth, reliable passenger handling and aircraft experience on the ground. This partnership strengthens our role in supporting high-quality ground handling services at Helsinki Airport and reflects our shared commitment to safety, efficiency, and excellent customer service. We are proud to partner with such a significant global carrier and excited for the collaboration ahead over the coming years.”
Aviator’s Regional Presence and Global Network
Aviator operates across 15 airports in the Nordic region, providing services to major airlines including Norwegian, Lufthansa Group, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Finnair, Air France-KLM, and Turkish Airlines. As part of Avia Solutions Group—the world’s largest ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) provider—Aviator leverages a global network that spans six continents and employs over 14,000 aviation professionals.
This new agreement highlights the ambitions of both Aviator and China Southern Airlines to expand their international operations despite the evolving challenges faced by the Asia-Pacific aviation sector. The partnership is anticipated to enhance service quality for passengers and support China Southern’s growth trajectory within the European market.
