Dassault Aviation and cortAIx Partner on Sovereign AI for Future Air Combat

Dassault Aviation and cortAIx Partner to Develop Sovereign AI for Future Air Combat
Dassault Aviation and Thales, through its AI accelerator cortAIx, have formalized a strategic partnership aimed at advancing sovereign, controlled, and supervised artificial intelligence (AI) solutions tailored for future air combat systems. The agreement was signed on November 18 by Dassault Aviation CEO Eric Trappier and Thales CEO Patrice Caine, and publicly announced at the International Adopt AI Summit in Paris on November 25, an event held under the patronage of the French President.
Advancing AI Integration in Military Aviation
The collaboration seeks to embed cutting-edge AI technologies into both manned and unmanned military aircraft, enhancing critical capabilities such as observation, situational analysis, decision-making, planning, and operational control. Dassault Aviation, renowned for its leadership in collaborative air combat systems, and cortAIx, Thales’ dedicated AI innovation accelerator, will jointly focus on research and development programs designed to shape the next generation of aeronautical defense.
Pascale Lohat, Chief Technical Officer at Dassault Aviation, described the partnership as the result of extensive strategic discussions and a shared commitment to delivering trusted, sovereign, and controlled AI solutions for the armed forces. The initiative is firmly rooted in adherence to national and European ethical frameworks, including compliance with the AI Act, and aims to cultivate a robust global ecosystem of technological partners.
Mickael Brossard, Vice-President of cortAIx Factory at Thales, highlighted the strengths brought by the partnership, noting that cortAIx combines Thales’ extensive technological heritage and decades of military expertise with the agility of a dynamic innovation accelerator. With operational presence in France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Singapore, and soon the United Arab Emirates, cortAIx is positioned to translate AI advancements into tangible enhancements in sovereignty and operational efficiency.
Challenges and Strategic Context
Despite the promising outlook, the partnership faces notable challenges. Ongoing tensions between France and Germany regarding the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) project may influence collaborative dynamics and the broader trajectory of European defense innovation. Market sentiment remains cautious amid concerns over a potential financial bubble in AI development, as observed by defense industry analyst Vincent Carchidi. Furthermore, the global competitive landscape is intensifying, with countries such as China significantly increasing investments in AI sovereignty, potentially altering the balance of innovation and competitiveness within the sector.
At the Adopt AI Summit, Dassault Aviation and Thales presented their vision for a secure, supervised, and sovereign AI framework tailored to military applications. Their strategy aligns with initiatives supported by the European Defence Fund and underscores the critical importance of trusted AI technologies in the future of defense.
