GCAA Director General Praises Aero Contractors’ MRO Impact on West and Central African Aviation

GCAA Director General Highlights Aero Contractors’ MRO Contribution to West and Central African Aviation
The Director General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur, has lauded Aero Contractors Limited’s Aircraft Maintenance Organisation (AMO) as a vital asset for commercial aviation across West and Central Africa. During a recent visit to the Aero Contractors maintenance facility located at the General Aviation Terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Rev. Arthur expressed strong admiration for the facility’s capabilities, which he described as exceeding his expectations.
Strategic Importance of Local MRO Facilities
Rev. Arthur underscored the essential role that local Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services play in reducing operational costs for airlines in the region. Historically, many West African carriers have been compelled to send their aircraft to Europe or the United States for major maintenance checks, incurring substantial expenses related to fuel, crew allowances, and navigation fees. These additional costs are frequently transferred to passengers through higher airfares.
“Many of us have no idea how the cost of aircraft maintenance affects the overall cost of operations, which eventually translates to the cost of air tickets. It is not just fuel that is used to fly an aircraft; there is also the cost of maintaining, repairing and overhauling it,” Rev. Arthur explained. He emphasized that the presence of a major MRO facility such as Aero Contractors’ within the sub-region can significantly alleviate these financial burdens. By providing maintenance services locally, airlines avoid the high costs associated with long-haul ferry flights and reduce aircraft downtime, resulting in considerable savings.
Regional Impact and Future Prospects
Describing Aero Contractors’ MRO as a strategic advantage for Ghana and neighbouring ECOWAS countries, Rev. Arthur called for increased recognition and patronage of the facility. He revealed that Ghana is in the process of establishing a national carrier and expressed satisfaction that a certified maintenance provider is already operational within the region, which bodes well for the country’s aviation ambitions.
The growing prominence of Aero Contractors’ MRO comes amid intensifying competition from other regional providers, such as Air Congo, which has been expanding its market share in West and Central Africa. The endorsement from the GCAA Director General is expected to elevate the profile of the MRO sector, potentially raising expectations among airlines and encouraging competitors to enhance their own services and market presence.
Rev. Arthur concluded by urging airlines to support local MRO services, emphasizing that increased patronage would foster further growth and development. “I think we should celebrate the existence of the Aero MRO and encourage airlines to patronise it. It is in patronising it that they can also expand and offer more. This facility is not just for Nigeria or the sub-region; it is for the aviation industry as a whole. It is a cause to celebrate, to patronise and to see,” he stated.
