GE Aerospace and UAW Remain at Odds as Cincinnati Strike Persists
GE Aerospace and the United Auto Workers (UAW) remain deadlocked as a strike at two vital facilities near Cincinnati enters its second week. More than 640 unionized employees initiated the walkout on August 28 after rejecting GE’s latest contract proposal, which included a 12% wage increase spread over three years. Despite ongoing negotiations, both parties report minimal progress toward resolving the dispute.
Impact on Operations and Negotiations
The strike affects GE’s Evendale, Ohio, and Erlanger, Kentucky, plants, which are integral to the company’s aerospace operations. The Evendale facility specializes in aeroderivative engines used in marine and industrial applications, while Erlanger handles the shipment of new and spare aircraft engine components. Production of the CFM International Leap turbofans—engines that power prominent commercial aircraft such as Boeing’s 737 Max and Airbus’ A320neo family—is notably disrupted by the walkout.
GE asserts that both plants continue to operate at normal productivity levels despite the strike. However, UAW president Shawn Fain argues that the disruption is significantly impacting GE’s aircraft engine business, highlighting Erlanger as a “single point of failure” for critical parts distribution. Fain criticized GE’s stance as “financially reckless” for refusing to halt the strike.
Negotiations have reached an impasse, with GE stating on September 4 that the parties “remain far apart” and accusing the UAW of failing to engage in good faith bargaining. Conversely, the union claims its bargaining committee has made multiple attempts to resume discussions but has yet to receive a response from the company.
Points of Contention and Broader Context
A major sticking point in the negotiations is GE’s proposal to raise workers’ healthcare premiums by 18%, which the company estimates would increase family plan costs by approximately $2,300 over three years. GE contends that this increase is offset by $29,000 in additional compensation during the same period, including the proposed wage increase, reinstatement of a cost-of-living adjustment, and accelerated cash payments. In a statement, GE emphasized pride in its offer, describing it as competitive and reflective of respect for its UAW-represented employees.
The UAW leadership rejected the offer without submitting it to a membership vote, a decision defended by Fain as the prerogative of locally elected representatives responsible for contract negotiations. GE expressed disappointment, asserting that its employees deserve a direct voice in determining their future.
The UAW’s bargaining unit at GE represents roughly 1% of the company’s 53,000 employees as of the end of 2025. Meanwhile, GE has successfully negotiated new contracts with other unions, including the International Association of Machinists in Cincinnati and the IUE-CWA, which covers workers across several states.
Strategic Developments Amid the Dispute
Despite the ongoing labor unrest, GE Aerospace continues to advance its strategic priorities. The company recently announced a partnership with BETA Technologies to develop a hybrid electric turbogenerator, underscoring its commitment to sustainable aviation technologies. Investor confidence remains strong, as evidenced by GE Aerospace’s inclusion in 1,311 investment portfolios during the second quarter of 2025. This optimism reflects the company’s $1 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing and renewed focus on industrial production.
As the strike persists, both GE Aerospace and the UAW remain firmly entrenched, with no immediate resolution forthcoming.
