IATA to Convene Aviation Leaders in Cairo to Rethink Ground Operations
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) will convene a significant conference in Cairo, bringing together aviation leaders to address the evolving landscape of ground operations in the context of artificial intelligence (AI). The event, titled “Adapting Ground Operations in an Era of AI,” will focus on how the integration of AI and automation, alongside human expertise, can enhance safety, efficiency, and resilience amid the sector’s growing challenges.
Addressing Industry Challenges Through AI and Energy Security
A central theme of the conference will be the adoption of AI technologies to streamline ground processes and improve operational safety. This focus is particularly urgent as the aviation industry grapples with increasing geopolitical tensions, notably ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. These disruptions have exposed vulnerabilities in ground operations and fuel supply chains, compelling airlines and stakeholders to reassess energy security strategies and explore alternative energy investments. In response to these uncertainties, some carriers are adopting frameworks such as RADIANCE to ensure operational continuity and mitigate risks.
The conference also reflects broader shifts within the industry as airlines respond to changing market dynamics and heightened competition. For instance, carriers like IndiGo have appointed seasoned executives, including Willie Walsh, to lead transformation initiatives and manage operational crises, underscoring the sector’s commitment to adaptive leadership.
Updated Dangerous Goods Regulations and Passenger Safety Initiatives
In conjunction with these strategic discussions, IATA has released the 67th edition of its Dangerous Goods Regulations, effective from January 1, 2026. The updated rules continue to enforce strict prohibitions on dangerous goods in both checked and carry-on baggage, except where explicitly permitted. The regulations cover a range of items including alcoholic beverages, aerosols, medical equipment, batteries, and electronic devices.
A notable emphasis is placed on batteries, particularly portable power banks frequently carried by travelers. Under the new guidelines, power banks are classified as spare batteries and must be transported exclusively in cabin baggage. Spare or loose batteries for portable electronics must be individually protected against short circuits. Lithium-ion batteries are subject to watt-hour limits: up to 100 Wh with a maximum of 20 spare batteries per passenger, though airlines may authorize additional quantities. Larger lithium batteries, ranging from 100 Wh to 160 Wh, require airline approval and are limited to two per passenger, also restricted to hand luggage.
The regulations differentiate spare batteries from devices with installed batteries, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, cameras, and certain medical devices. While these devices may be carried under separate conditions, if placed in checked baggage, they must be fully powered off and safeguarded against accidental activation or damage.
Items that remain fully prohibited include disabling devices like pepper spray and electroshock weapons such as Tasers. IATA also notes that airlines and national authorities may impose further restrictions beyond the established framework.
To enhance passenger awareness, IATA has launched the “Travel Smart with Lithium Batteries” campaign, providing clear guidance to minimize risks associated with carrying electronic devices.
Navigating a Transforming Aviation Landscape
As the aviation industry confronts rapid technological advancements and external pressures, the Cairo conference seeks to establish a forward-looking agenda for ground operations. By balancing innovation with safety and resilience, the event aims to equip the sector to navigate a complex and rapidly changing environment.
