Johnson Matthey on FT CANS Innovations and Global SAF Expansion

Johnson Matthey Advances Sustainable Aviation Fuel Technologies with FT CANS™ and HyCOgen™
Johnson Matthey, a global leader in sustainable chemistry, is accelerating the expansion of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production worldwide through its innovative technology platforms. Central to this effort are the FT CANS™ platform, co-developed with bp, and the HyCOgen™ technology, which enhances syngas generation efficiency. These technologies are designed to improve the scalability, efficiency, and flexibility of SAF production from a diverse range of feedstocks, supporting both new greenfield projects and retrofit initiatives.
In a detailed discussion with ChemAnalyst, Alberto Giovanzana, Managing Director Licensing at Johnson Matthey, outlined the company’s strategic approach to advancing SAF and its broader commitment to decarbonising the aviation sector. The company is also expanding its involvement in adjacent low-carbon fuels, including renewable diesel, e-fuels, and hydrogen, to further contribute to global aviation decarbonisation efforts.
Innovations in Fischer-Tropsch Technology and Syngas Production
Johnson Matthey’s FT CANS™ technology represents a significant breakthrough in the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process, addressing longstanding challenges such as catalyst degradation, heat management, and product selectivity. Traditional FT systems have struggled with maintaining catalyst integrity due to hotspots generated during the highly exothermic reaction, limiting operational lifespan and scalability. The FT CANS™ platform overcomes these issues through advanced catalyst carriers that efficiently remove heat, preventing damage and extending catalyst life.
Moreover, the catalyst formulations in FT CANS™ are engineered to enhance selectivity towards long-chain hydrocarbons that are ideal for SAF, while reducing the formation of unwanted by-products. The modular reactor design further enables flexible deployment at various scales, optimising the use of eligible carbon feedstocks and ensuring economic viability. These improvements collectively make the FT CANS™ system a reliable and scalable solution for producing high-purity synthetic fuels.
Complementing FT CANS™, Johnson Matthey’s HyCOgen™ technology improves the efficiency of syngas production by capturing and recycling carbon dioxide. This innovation not only enhances the overall sustainability of the fuel production process but also supports the integration of diverse feedstocks, thereby broadening the potential for SAF manufacturing.
Strategic Collaborations and Expanding Low-Carbon Fuel Portfolio
Johnson Matthey is actively strengthening partnerships with key industry players such as Honeywell and GIDARA Energy to accelerate the deployment of SAF technologies globally. These collaborations aim to support both greenfield developments and retrofit projects, facilitating the rapid scale-up of sustainable fuel production capacity.
Beyond SAF, the company is expanding its footprint in related low-carbon fuel sectors, including renewable diesel, e-fuels, and hydrogen. This diversified approach reflects Johnson Matthey’s commitment to driving the decarbonisation of aviation and other hard-to-abate industries by providing a comprehensive suite of sustainable fuel solutions. Through these efforts, Johnson Matthey seeks to play a pivotal role in reducing the aviation sector’s greenhouse gas emissions, which currently account for approximately 2 to 2.5 percent of global emissions and are expected to rise without significant intervention.
