Sun Group Partners to Develop $360 Million Aircraft Repair Facility at Van Don Airport

Sun Group to Develop $360 Million Aircraft Repair Facility at Van Don Airport
A significant agreement was formalized on June 16 at Van Don International Airport, initiating the development of a $360 million aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) complex. This project represents a major advancement for Van Don, marking it as the first privately operated airport in Vietnam to partner with international aviation firms on a facility of this scale.
Facility Development and Capacity
The MRO complex will be established on over 20 hectares within the airport premises. The initial phase aims to construct a facility adhering to international standards, capable of servicing four wide-body and two narrow-body aircraft simultaneously. This capacity will position the center among the largest aircraft maintenance hubs in Vietnam. A subsequent phase is planned to expand hangar space and operational areas, enhancing both efficiency and economic viability.
Scheduled to become operational by late 2028, the project aligns with the increasing global demand for aircraft aerostructures and the rapid expansion of the MRO market. Upon completion, the facility is expected to generate nearly 1,000 jobs, including approximately 200 roles designated for foreign experts and skilled technicians. This investment is anticipated to contribute significantly to the development of a highly qualified aviation technical workforce, addressing the sector’s growing need for specialized skills and sustained training programs.
Challenges and Market Impact
Despite its promising outlook, the project faces several challenges. Ensuring regulatory compliance, upholding rigorous quality standards, and managing the complex logistics associated with aircraft maintenance will be critical to its success. The introduction of Sun Group’s facility is also expected to intensify competition among existing MRO providers in the region, potentially prompting strategic partnerships or expansions as competitors seek to maintain their market positions.
Strategic Expansion in Aviation
This MRO development complements Sun Group’s expanding portfolio in the aviation sector. Recently, Sun PhuQuoc Airways commenced operations on the Ho Chi Minh City–Van Don route, offering four return flights weekly. The airline plans to launch three additional domestic routes in July, including Hanoi–Nha Trang with three daily flights, Ho Chi Minh City–Haiphong with one daily flight, and Haiphong–Phu Quoc with one daily flight.
Project partners emphasize that the new MRO facility will enhance Vietnam’s aviation capabilities by improving maintenance services and supporting the sustained growth of the national aircraft fleet. As regional air traffic continues to increase, the Van Don MRO complex is positioned to reinforce the airport’s status as a vital aviation gateway and an emerging industrial hub within Vietnam.
