Texas Southern University Adds Twin-Engine Aircraft to Flight Training Fleet

Texas Southern University Enhances Flight Training with Advanced Twin-Engine Aircraft
HOUSTON, June 6, 2026 — Texas Southern University (TSU) has taken a significant step forward in its aviation program by adding a state-of-the-art Diamond DA42 twin-engine aircraft to its training fleet. The delivery of this advanced aircraft on Friday marks a pivotal moment in the university’s efforts to elevate its flight training capabilities and strengthen its position among leading aviation programs in the United States.
A Milestone in Flight Training
Dr. Terence Fontaine, Executive Director of Aviation at TSU, described the acquisition as one of the program’s defining achievements. While the university has previously operated a twin-engine aircraft, the new DA42 represents a substantial technological upgrade. “We’ve had a twin-engine airplane in our fleet before, but nothing like this,” Dr. Fontaine explained. “The previous aircraft was a 1980 Seneca II. This one is a 2026 brand-new Diamond DA42 with the latest technology.”
The addition of the DA42 will enable students to obtain their multi-engine rating, an essential credential for those pursuing the Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certification required for commercial airline careers. Renowned for its advanced avionics and safety features, the DA42 is considered one of the most sophisticated multi-engine trainers available worldwide.
Commitment to Safety and Excellence
TSU’s fleet expansion arrives amid increased scrutiny of flight training safety, particularly following the U.S. Air Force’s recent suspension of T-38 Talon II trainer flights after a fatal crash. In this context, TSU’s investment in cutting-edge technology underscores its dedication to maintaining high safety standards and providing students with reliable, modern training equipment. This move is likely to prompt other aviation programs to emphasize the safety and technological sophistication of their own fleets, intensifying competition within the sector.
Reflecting on the program’s growth, Dr. Fontaine remarked, “In the last eight years since I’ve been at Texas Southern, it’s been like finishing a puzzle, and there were just a couple of pieces left to make it what I refer to as the best program in the country. There are universities rated higher than Texas Southern because they’ve been around longer, but we’ve done everything possible to elevate our program. This is one of the final pieces of the puzzle and we’re elated.”
Recent Developments and Industry Partnerships
The arrival of the DA42 follows several key advancements in TSU’s aviation program. In April, the university inaugurated a new 20,000-square-foot hangar at the Houston Spaceport, which houses a recently acquired fleet of 12 Cirrus SR20 aircraft. The facility also includes 3,800 square feet of classroom and office space, supporting expanded instructional capacity and laying the foundation for TSU’s emerging aerospace engineering program.
TSU has further strengthened its ties with the aviation industry by joining Delta’s Propel Pilot Career Path Program and expanding affiliations with United’s Aviate Program, Southwest Airlines’ Destination 225°, and Republic Airways’ Pathway Program. These partnerships, combined with the enhanced training fleet, position TSU to attract a growing number of students and deepen connections with airlines and aviation companies, particularly those focused on twin-engine aircraft technology.
Through these strategic investments and collaborations, Texas Southern University continues to build its reputation as a leader in aviation education both within Texas and on the national stage.
