A220 Deliveries Exceed 500 Aircraft

Airbus A220 Deliveries Surpass 500, Marking a Major Milestone
Airbus has achieved a significant milestone with the delivery of over 500 A220 aircraft, reflecting the programme’s steady expansion and growing market presence. This landmark comes a decade after the aircraft first entered commercial service as the Bombardier CSeries, underscoring its sustained success in the competitive single-aisle segment.
Evolution and Market Penetration
Originally launched by Bombardier, the CSeries began operations in 2013. Prior to Airbus’s acquisition of the programme in mid-2018, Bombardier had delivered 37 aircraft, comprising 29 CS300s and eight CS100s. Following the takeover, Airbus rebranded the models as the A220-300 and A220-100, respectively, and has since delivered an additional 464 aircraft. By the end of March, total deliveries reached 501.
The A220 has gained considerable traction among airlines, now serving nearly 2,000 routes worldwide. Airbus’s backlog data indicates close to 1,000 total orders, with 959 aircraft on order, of which 851 are for the larger A220-300 variant. Prior to the transition, Bombardier had secured 402 orders for the CSeries.
Prospects and Challenges
This delivery milestone has renewed interest in the A220 programme, particularly among carriers such as Air Canada and leasing firm Azorra, both reportedly evaluating the proposed A220-500 stretch version. The introduction of this larger variant could further enhance the A220’s competitive position in the single-aisle market.
However, the programme faces challenges. Air Baltic recently experienced a setback when one of its A220-300s was written off following a maintenance incident. Additionally, while Airbus recorded strong first-quarter orders for both the A320neo family and the A220-300, deliveries of the A320neo declined, indicating shifting market dynamics that may elevate the strategic importance of the A220 line.
Expanding Global Footprint
The A220’s global presence continues to grow. Air Niugini’s recent acquisition of the A220-300, which has arrived in Australia, adds nearly 65,000 seats annually to the market and enhances regional connectivity. This development highlights the aircraft’s expanding role in supporting airline networks and adapting to evolving passenger demand.
As Airbus capitalizes on the A220’s success, the aircraft remains a vital component of the evolving single-aisle market, offering airlines efficiency and operational flexibility across diverse routes. With robust demand and ongoing interest in new variants, the A220 programme is positioned for continued growth amid industry challenges.
