Air Canada Names Anko Van der Werff as CEO

Air Canada Appoints Anko Van der Werff as President and CEO
Montréal, July 8, 2026 — Air Canada has announced that Anko Van der Werff will assume the role of President and Chief Executive Officer effective at the end of January 2027. Currently serving as President and CEO of Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), Van der Werff will also join Air Canada’s Board of Directors. He will succeed Michael Rousseau, who is retiring after a distinguished 19-year tenure with the airline.
Leadership Transition Amid Strategic Renewal
The appointment follows an extensive global search process, with Air Canada’s Board highlighting Van der Werff’s broad international aviation expertise and proven leadership record. Vagn Sørensen, Chair of the Board, emphasized the significance of securing an executive of Van der Werff’s calibre. “He has an exceptional breadth of international aviation experience and a proven 25-year track record, including recent leadership at SAS, Avianca Group, Aeroméxico, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, and Qatar Airways,” Sørensen stated. “We are confident he will drive further value-creating growth and transformation while maintaining our commitment to disciplined capital allocation.”
Van der Werff’s appointment arrives at a critical juncture for Air Canada, which continues to navigate the aftermath of a French-language controversy that impacted outgoing CEO Michael Rousseau. Reflecting the airline’s dedication to bilingualism and its Canadian identity, the Board’s selection criteria included proficiency in French.
Market response to the announcement has been largely positive, with industry analysts noting Van der Werff’s strong record in steering airlines through transformative periods. While competitor reactions remain uncertain, the sector is expected to closely monitor any strategic initiatives introduced under his leadership.
Incoming CEO’s Vision and Outgoing CEO’s Legacy
Expressing his enthusiasm, Van der Werff remarked, “It is an honour to be chosen to lead this iconic Canadian company as it advances its ambitions and strategy, builds on its award-winning employee culture and customer value proposition, and prepares for an even brighter future. I look forward to working closely with Air Canada’s talented executive team and all employees to fulfil our commitments to shareholders and customers. I am excited about relocating to Montréal and eager to get started.”
Sørensen also paid tribute to Rousseau’s contributions, stating, “The Board is grateful to Michael Rousseau for his outstanding leadership and extraordinary contributions, which are in large part responsible for the enviable position Air Canada enjoys among global carriers. We thank him for that legacy and for his support with the transition.”
Rousseau’s retirement will take effect on August 31, 2026. He will remain available to assist during the transition period, after which the Executive Committee will report directly to the Board until Van der Werff officially assumes his duties.
