Airbus Secures Orders for Up to 232 Aircraft at Dubai Airshow 2025
DUBAI — Airbus announced a significant wave of new orders and commitments for up to 232 aircraft during the Dubai Airshow 2025, underscoring robust global demand for fuel-efficient jets and long-haul expansion. Leading the surge were major Middle Eastern carriers including Etihad Airways and Emirates, alongside flydubai, Air Europa, Ethiopian Airlines, Silk Way West Airlines, and Libya’s Buraq Air. The agreements encompass firm orders, fresh leases, and strategic memorandums of understanding, reflecting airlines’ focus on operational efficiency, network growth, and fleet modernization.
Expansion of Middle Eastern Fleets
Etihad Airways confirmed firm orders for six A330-900s, seven additional A350-1000s, and three A350F freighters. The Abu Dhabi-based carrier also committed to leasing nine A330-900s through Avolon, reinforcing its medium- and long-haul as well as cargo capabilities. Airbus executives emphasized the alignment between Etihad’s growth strategy and the performance advantages of the A330neo and A350 families.
Emirates further expanded its A350-900 backlog by eight units, increasing its total to 73 aircraft, with deliveries scheduled for 2031. The airline highlighted the A350’s operational reliability and efficiency, while Rolls-Royce reaffirmed confidence in the Trent XWB-84 engine that powers the model. Emirates’ total widebody orders now stand at 375, underscoring its commitment to fleet renewal and expansion.
In a notable development, flydubai signed a memorandum of understanding for 150 A321neo aircraft, marking its first-ever Airbus order. This strategic move signals a diversification away from its traditional reliance on Boeing and may challenge Boeing’s dominance in the budget carrier segment. The A321neo will support flydubai’s expansion at Dubai World Central and address growing demand for regional and international travel.
Long-Haul and Cargo Fleet Enhancements
Air Europa reached a memorandum of understanding for up to 40 A350-900s, aiming to accelerate its long-haul fleet renewal and strengthen routes to Latin America. Airbus highlighted the A350’s economic benefits and passenger comfort, which align with Air Europa’s strategic objectives.
Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest operator of the A350, ordered six additional A350-900s, citing the aircraft’s efficiency and versatility as critical to its sustainable growth plans.
In the cargo sector, Silk Way West Airlines added two A350F freighters, bringing its total to four. The airline was attracted by the aircraft’s payload capacity, emissions profile, and compliance with forthcoming ICAO standards. Meanwhile, Libya’s Buraq Air signed a memorandum of understanding for 10 A320neo Family jets, marking its entry as an Airbus customer and supporting its fleet modernization efforts.
Market Dynamics and Competitive Challenges
The surge in Airbus orders at the Dubai Airshow reflects strong market confidence, particularly among Middle Eastern carriers. However, Airbus faces potential challenges including aircraft delivery delays and intensifying competition from China, which is actively seeking to disrupt the longstanding Airbus-Boeing duopoly. Industry analysts anticipate positive market reactions to the announcements, while Boeing is expected to respond with new deals to maintain its competitive position.
As the Dubai Airshow 2025 concludes, Airbus’s latest agreements highlight both the company’s momentum and the evolving dynamics of the global aviation market.
