Airwolf Aerospace Expands Certification for True Blue Power Lithium-Ion Batteries
Airwolf Aerospace has announced the receipt of new supplemental type certificate (STC) approvals from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (UK-CAA) for the installation of True Blue Power lithium-ion batteries across a variety of helicopter models. The newly granted UK-CAA STCs—UK.STC.00416 and UK.STC.00418—complement an expanding portfolio of international certifications, which already includes approvals from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), Transport Canada (TCCA), and Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC).
Certified Helicopter Models and Battery Specifications
The latest STCs cover several widely used helicopters, including Airbus models H125/AS350, AS355, EC-120, and H130/EC130; Bell 206A/B and 206L/L1/L3/L4; Enstrom 480B; MD Helicopters 369/500; and the Hiller UH-12E, the latter certified under FAA and Transport Canada jurisdictions only. These approvals apply specifically to True Blue Power’s TB17 (17AH) and TB20 (20AH) lithium-ion batteries, which hold Technical Standard Order (TSO) certification and have demonstrated reliability in operational environments.
These lithium-ion batteries offer significant advantages over traditional counterparts. They reduce weight by up to 63%, thereby increasing useful load capacity. Their design enables faster and cooler engine starts with higher voltage output, ensuring dependable power delivery. Additionally, the batteries support rapid recharging, achieving full charge within four to ten minutes after engine start. Their average lifespan extends to eight years, which reduces replacement frequency and lowers maintenance demands. Maintenance intervals are notably extended, with the TB17 requiring servicing every two years and the TB20 maintained on an on-condition basis, eliminating the need for frequent capacity checks and the specialized upkeep associated with nickel-cadmium batteries. Furthermore, the batteries incorporate an automatic heater for cold weather operation, removing the necessity to remove batteries in extreme temperatures, and provide enhanced protection against hot starts and battery failures.
Airwolf estimates that operators could realize annual savings of up to $4,000 in battery service costs, alongside improved aircraft availability due to reduced maintenance downtime and longer battery life. These operational efficiencies are expected to generate considerable interest among helicopter operators and maintenance organizations.
Market Challenges and Industry Outlook
Despite these advancements, Airwolf Aerospace faces ongoing challenges in the evolving battery technology market. The high production costs and manufacturing complexities of solid-state batteries remain significant obstacles. Moreover, competition from established liquid electrolyte battery technologies is intensifying. Industry analysts anticipate that competitors will accelerate their own battery development efforts to maintain market share, particularly as FAA STC approvals for True Blue Power lithium-ion batteries in Gulfstream and Bombardier business jets are expected in the first half of 2026.
Airwolf Aerospace is currently exhibiting its latest STCs and battery technologies at Vertical MRO in Irving, Texas (Booth 324). The company is actively engaging with operators and maintenance providers to discuss existing certifications, forthcoming approvals for higher amperage battery models, additional installation options, and new STCs covering both rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft.
With regulatory approvals broadening and market demand increasing, Airwolf Aerospace is positioning itself as a leader in advanced aircraft battery solutions while navigating the complexities of technological innovation and competitive pressures within the aerospace industry.
