APEX TECH 2026: Engineering the Next Phase of Connected Travel
At APEX TECH 2026, industry leaders convened to explore the technological advancements shaping the future of connected travel and inflight experiences. The panel, moderated by Inflight Magazine Editor Satu Dahl, included prominent figures such as Walter Berggren, Head of IFEC Engineering at Reaktor Aero; Cyril Jean, CEO of PXCom; Premjith Manapetty, Head of IFEC, Digital & Tech at Air India; and Mark Wright, Global Senior Vice President of Business Development at Spafax. Their discussion centered on how innovations in performance engineering, data integration, and intelligent inflight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) systems are transforming airline operations and elevating passenger expectations.
From Hardware Bottlenecks to Software-Driven Platforms
The panelists highlighted a significant shift in the industry’s approach to inflight technology. Walter Berggren reflected on the historical constraints posed by hardware, noting that it had long been a limiting factor in progress. However, with recent advancements in seatback screens and processing capabilities, hardware is no longer the primary barrier. Instead, the focus has shifted decisively toward software development. Berggren emphasized the necessity of creating digital platforms that are adaptive and capable of continuous improvement, moving away from static, one-time installations.
Cyril Jean reinforced this perspective by underscoring the benefits of open platforms and the deeper integration between seatback systems and inflight connectivity. He explained that these developments unlock new possibilities for personalization and revenue generation, marking a major improvement in the passenger experience. From the airline’s standpoint, Premjith Manapetty stressed the urgency of aligning software capabilities with the rapidly evolving expectations passengers have based on their ground experiences. He warned against relying on outdated systems, stating that inflight software must keep pace with contemporary digital standards to remain relevant.
Seamless Connectivity and the Rise of AI-Driven Travel
The conversation then shifted to connectivity, which panelists agreed has become a baseline expectation for travelers. Manapetty argued that technology reaches maturity when it becomes invisible to users, suggesting that ongoing discussions about connectivity indicate it has yet to fully achieve this status. For passengers, seamless connectivity means uninterrupted service without dead zones or cumbersome workarounds.
The panel also addressed the growing role of artificial intelligence in travel planning, particularly as younger generations such as Gen Z and Alpha increasingly depend on generative AI for discovery and booking. This trend is compelling airlines and suppliers to rethink their digital strategies, ensuring their platforms are optimized for AI-driven search and recommendations rather than traditional SEO methods. The integration of AI not only enhances personalization but also necessitates robust data infrastructure. Companies that fail to adapt risk losing market visibility and revenue, while those investing in AI capabilities stand to gain competitive advantage. As the industry accelerates its AI adoption, it faces the dual challenge and opportunity of building scalable, intelligent digital ecosystems that meet the rising expectations of modern travelers.
Looking Ahead
APEX TECH 2026 underscored that the future of connected travel will be shaped by agile software solutions, seamless connectivity, and AI-driven personalization. Airlines and suppliers are confronted with a clear imperative: to adapt swiftly, invest in intelligent platforms, and deliver inflight experiences that align with the digital habits and expectations of tomorrow’s passengers.
