Flights Delayed at Delhi Airport Due to Air Traffic Control Technical Issue

Flights Delayed at Delhi Airport Following Air Traffic Control Technical Failure
Flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi experienced significant disruption on Friday due to a technical malfunction within the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system. The failure led to delays affecting over 300 flights and left hundreds of passengers stranded across the airport’s terminals.
Technical Glitch and Operational Impact
The disruption originated late Thursday when the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS), a vital communication network that feeds data to the Auto Track System (ATS), malfunctioned. The ATS is responsible for generating flight plans used by air traffic controllers. With the automated system offline, controllers were compelled to manually process flight plans, a time-consuming procedure that slowed operations considerably and caused congestion in the surrounding airspace.
Aviation expert Captain Sharath Panicker highlighted the challenges posed by the manual processing of flight plans, noting that this method inherently results in delays. The technical issue also affected the Automatic Terminal Information System (ATIS), which provides meteorological data to pilots and controllers. As a result, weather updates had to be entered manually, further compounding pre-flight delays. While airborne operations remained largely unaffected, the departure process was substantially hindered.
Response and Passenger Experience
Restoration efforts were ongoing throughout the morning, with officials optimistic about resolving the issue by day’s end. A senior airport official confirmed that controllers were still preparing flight plans manually, which was causing significant delays. IGIA, India’s busiest airport with more than 1,500 daily flight movements, saw average departure delays of 45 to 50 minutes by 9 a.m., according to flight-tracking platform Flightradar24.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) stated that teams were collaborating closely with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to restore normal operations. Major carriers including IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Air India issued advisories alerting passengers to potential delays. IndiGo acknowledged the impact of the technical issue on its operations via social media, while SpiceJet warned that all departures and arrivals could be affected due to ATC congestion. Air India apologized for the disruption and assured that its crew and ground staff were assisting affected passengers.
Within the terminals, travelers faced long queues, repeated rescheduling, and extended waiting times aboard aircraft. Many passengers expressed frustration on social media over prolonged delays and a perceived lack of clear communication from airlines. By midday, technicians were still working to fully restore the system, with officials cautioning that clearing the backlog would require several hours. The delays also caused ripple effects at other airports, including Lucknow, Jaipur, Chandigarh, and Amritsar.
Broader Implications and Ongoing Challenges
The incident has raised concerns regarding passenger dissatisfaction, potential financial losses for airlines, and increased scrutiny from regulatory bodies. Airlines may be compelled to reroute flights or cancel evening departures due to limited runway parking availability, while passengers seek alternative travel arrangements and compensation. This disruption occurs amid a wider context of air traffic control staffing shortages and technical difficulties affecting airports worldwide, intensifying operational challenges for both airlines and regulators.
A senior official from the Airports Authority of India reported around noon that ATC operations remained stable but slower than usual, with restoration work continuing. The situation remains under close observation as efforts persist to return flight operations to normal.
