GE Aerospace Plans to Build Local Manufacturing and Skills Capacity in Pune After 10 Years

GE Aerospace Strengthens Manufacturing and Skills Development in Pune After a Decade
American aircraft engine manufacturer GE Aerospace is significantly expanding its investment in high-value manufacturing and workforce development at its Pune facility, marking ten years of operations in the city. The company aims to position Pune as a strategic hub for the production of commercial jet engine components, while simultaneously enhancing local technical skills. This initiative is viewed as vital not only for GE Aerospace’s growth but also for advancing India’s ambitions in the aerospace and defense sectors.
Building Local Capacity and Workforce Expertise
Since its establishment, the Pune facility has become a centre for producing components for major engine models including the GE90, GEnx, GE9X, and LEAP engines—the latter manufactured by CFM International, a joint venture between GE and Safran. The plant has trained over 5,000 production associates through apprenticeships and other skill development programmes, contributing to a robust local aerospace workforce. Currently, more than 1,400 GE and CFM commercial engines power aircraft operated by Indian carriers, underscoring the facility’s strategic importance.
Last year, GE Aerospace announced an investment exceeding ₹240 crore to expand and upgrade the Pune plant. The facility operates under the company’s proprietary lean operations model, FLIGHT DECK, which enhances efficiency and quality. The company also focuses on nurturing engineering talent by providing a blend of classroom instruction and practical shop floor training to diploma engineers annually. Additionally, GE Aerospace supports part-time graduate engineering programmes and collaborates with educational institutions by funding equipment and training initiatives to further develop local capabilities. Amol Nagar, Executive Director of Global Manufacturing Operations & Supply Chain at GE Aerospace, expressed pride in the progress made in Maharashtra to develop high-value manufacturing and skilling capacity.
Navigating Industry Challenges and Competitive Pressures
GE Aerospace’s expansion in Pune occurs amid broader challenges within the aerospace sector. Recent labor strikes and tentative agreements have highlighted the critical importance of maintaining effective labor relations. These developments raise questions about the company’s ability to manage workforce transitions smoothly while sustaining production quality during periods of change. Industry observers are closely monitoring how GE Aerospace addresses these issues as it scales up operations.
Competition within India’s aerospace manufacturing landscape is also intensifying. Local companies such as Aequs are expanding their manufacturing capacities, increasing competitive pressure on GE Aerospace. This environment underscores the necessity for the company to maintain its technological edge and continue investing in talent development to remain a leader in the sector.
Commitment to India’s Aerospace Ecosystem
GE Aerospace’s efforts in Pune align with India’s broader strategy to cultivate a future-ready workforce capable of supporting the country’s rapidly growing aerospace and defense industries. Developing advanced manufacturing and skilling capacity is considered essential to achieving these national objectives.
Beyond Pune, GE Aerospace recently celebrated 25 years at the John F Welch Technology Centre in Bengaluru, reaffirming its long-term commitment to India’s aerospace ecosystem and its role in supporting the nation’s industrial and technological advancement.
