Highlights from the 8th Annual Cathay Hackathon
Cathay Airways concluded its eighth annual Cathay Hackathon last weekend at Cathay City, reaffirming its dedication to innovation and digital leadership within the aviation sector. The flagship two-day event brought together 225 innovators who engaged in a rigorous 24-hour challenge, transforming ambitious concepts into practical digital solutions. This year marked the introduction of a new Employee Track, broadening the event’s scope by inviting Cathay’s global workforce to collaborate alongside university students on real-world business challenges.
Expanding Innovation Through Collaboration
Originally launched in 2024 as an internal initiative, the Employee Track empowers staff worldwide to contribute innovative ideas and develop transformative solutions. By combining fresh perspectives with extensive industry expertise, the Hackathon fostered a dynamic exchange of ideas, generating concepts with the potential to shape the future of aviation. The 2025 edition set new participation records, attracting over 1,900 university student applications and more than 200 employee applications. Following a competitive selection process, 36 student teams and 12 employee teams advanced to Development Day at Cathay City, where they developed and prototyped solutions addressing a wide range of challenges. These included enhancing lifestyle offerings, improving customer experience, optimizing cargo management, and increasing operational efficiency.
Despite the inherent challenges of fostering innovation, ensuring market relevance, and distinguishing itself amid growing competition from other hackathons, the event received positive responses from the market. Participants and sponsors underscored the importance of such platforms in driving technological advancement, while competitors responded by enhancing their own hackathons to attract top talent. The strong turnout from diverse sectors highlighted the increasing significance of hackathons in both the technology and finance industries.
Celebrating Innovation and Future Prospects
After an intense 24 hours of ideation, the top five teams from each track presented their solutions to a distinguished panel of industry experts. At the award ceremony, Cathay Group Chief Financial Officer Rebecca Sharpe emphasized the event’s impact, stating, “Innovation starts with each of us, and this year’s Cathay Hackathon is a testament to that belief. By introducing the employee track, we’ve created a unique platform where fresh ideas meet deep industry expertise, forging connections that spark real progress. At Cathay, we remain steadfast in our commitment to help Hong Kong grow as a world-leading hub for innovation and technology.”
Lawrence Fong, Cathay Director of Digital and IT, reflected on the event’s success: “Now in its 8th edition, this year’s Cathay Hackathon has been nothing short of inspiring. The creativity, passion, and energy continue to reach new heights year after year. What truly stood out was the remarkable spirit of collaboration—teams sharing ideas, supporting one another, and learning together. This Hackathon was more than a competition; it was a vibrant community of innovators and aviation enthusiasts, united by a shared mission to shape the future of travel.”
The event also featured a panel discussion titled “Empowering Youth to Lead Hong Kong’s Innovation Future,” which included leaders from Microsoft Hong Kong, Vidi Labs, Cyberport, Hong Kong Science and Technology Park, and Cathay. The panel highlighted the resources and tools available to support young innovators, further cementing the Hackathon’s role as a catalyst for technological progress in the region.
