NewBoCo to Lead Development of Iowa Aviation Technology Center
NewBoCo, a nonprofit organization based in Cedar Rapids, has been appointed to spearhead the development of the Iowa Aviation Technology Center (IATC), a regional initiative aimed at expanding the state’s aerospace and aviation workforce, fostering innovation, and supporting entrepreneurship. Funded through philanthropic contributions from JPMorganChase, the project seeks to address critical workforce shortages, align educational programs with industry demands, and broaden access to aerospace career opportunities for students throughout Iowa.
Strategic Vision and Collaborative Efforts
Majda Hadzic, JPMorganChase’s market director for Iowa, emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating that the IATC will enable Iowa’s workforce, entrepreneurs, and small businesses to actively participate in and benefit from the state’s growing aerospace industry. She highlighted the project’s potential to contribute to a stronger state economy.
In its leadership role, NewBoCo plans to establish an advisory group and enhance collaboration among educational institutions, industry leaders, government agencies, and economic development organizations. The organization aims to facilitate the transition of aerospace entrepreneurs from research phases to market-ready ventures while cultivating a comprehensive business support ecosystem.
Marty Lenss, director of the Eastern Iowa Airport (CID), noted that the IATC complements ongoing efforts to develop an Aerospace Industry Cluster in the region. CID, in partnership with the Iowa Economic Development Authority and consulting firm Oliver Wyman, recently completed a detailed study to guide regional economic development in aerospace. Lenss described the initiative as a strategic blueprint, underscoring the region’s rich aviation heritage—from the early days of Collins Radio to the current presence of Collins Aerospace, BAE, and the University of Iowa’s Operator Performance Laboratory. He characterized the IATC as a vital tool for the region to reclaim and build upon its aerospace legacy.
Planning, Challenges, and Future Outlook
During the initial planning phase, NewBoCo will convene key partners to develop a focused strategy aimed at achieving shared objectives. The organization will work closely with economic development groups to assess industry needs over the coming decade and to expand the pipeline of learners entering aerospace fields. Within the first year, NewBoCo intends to deliver a comprehensive, multi-phase project plan, outline resource requirements, engage stakeholders, and establish governance structures to ensure the initiative’s long-term sustainability.
Despite the promising outlook, NewBoCo faces several challenges, including securing adequate funding, fostering effective partnerships among diverse stakeholders, and ensuring the successful commercialization of aerospace innovations. The initiative has already attracted growing interest from educational institutions and businesses eager to participate in Iowa’s expanding aerospace sector. However, competition from other states and regions, which may enhance their own aviation technology programs, presents an additional challenge.
To support the IATC’s development, NewBoCo will also form an Aerospace Advisory Group, bringing together industry experts, researchers, and workforce development specialists. This group will provide critical guidance, manage project tasks, and coordinate partnerships. Ultimately, NewBoCo aims to position Iowa as a global leader in aviation technology, innovation, and workforce development.
