Pratt & Whitney Introduce First GTF Engine to China Airlines

Pratt & Whitney and China Airlines Celebrate Induction of First GTF Engine
EAST HARTFORD, Conn., Oct. 4, 2023 — Pratt & Whitney, a division of RTX, has marked a significant milestone in its partnership with China Airlines with the induction of the airline’s first Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engine. The ceremony, held at China Airlines’ facility in Taiwan, highlights the carrier’s expanding role within the global GTF Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) network.
Enhancing Maintenance Capabilities in the Asia-Pacific Region
China Airlines became part of the GTF MRO network in 2020, equipping its Engineering and Maintenance division with the expertise required to disassemble, assemble, and test the PW1100G-JM engine, the GTF model that powers the Airbus A320neo family. The airline selected the GTF engine in 2019 to power 25 Airbus A321neo aircraft, supported by a long-term EngineWise® Maintenance agreement. Currently, China Airlines operates 10 of these jets, with up to 15 additional aircraft on order.
Jung-Hui Lee, vice president at China Airlines, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “With the induction of our first GTF engine, we continue to build upon our longstanding relationship with Pratt & Whitney. The GTF engine is among the industry’s most fuel-efficient, and we are confident it will help drive a more sustainable future. We look forward to expanding our capabilities with this advanced technology to meet the needs of operators across Asia.”
Expanding the Global GTF MRO Network
Pratt & Whitney’s GTF engine is widely recognized for its fuel efficiency, a critical advantage as airlines and lessors increasingly prioritize sustainability and operational cost reduction. Despite strong competition from rival manufacturers such as CFM International, whose LEAP engines also power the A320neo family, Pratt & Whitney continues to strengthen its market position through expanded service capabilities.
Marc Meredith, vice president of GTF Engines Aftermarket at Pratt & Whitney, underscored the strategic importance of growing the GTF MRO network. “We are aggressively pursuing collaborations to grow GTF MRO capabilities. Our relationship with China Airlines dates back more than six decades, beginning with their operation of aircraft powered by our Twin Wasp engines.”
In 2023, Pratt & Whitney announced three facility expansions and three new shop activations within the GTF MRO network, which has more than doubled in size over the past four years. By 2025, the company expects to have 19 GTF MRO shops operational worldwide. China Airlines’ facility now represents the 14th active location and the sixth in the Asia-Pacific region for PW1100G-JM overhaul, joining sites in Singapore, Japan, and China.
The GTF MRO network forms a key component of Pratt & Whitney’s EngineWise® solutions, offering a comprehensive range of aftermarket services designed to deliver long-term, sustainable value for operators.
Pratt & Whitney is a global leader in the design, manufacture, and service of aircraft engines and auxiliary power units. Its parent company, RTX, is the world’s largest aerospace and defense firm, employing over 180,000 people worldwide and reporting sales of $67 billion in 2022.
