Virgin Australia Integrates ChatGPT for Flight Searches
Virgin Australia has become the first airline in Australia to incorporate flight search functionality directly within ChatGPT, offering travellers a novel, conversational method to explore fares and destinations. Announced on 10 June 2026, this integration enables users to communicate their travel preferences through the Virgin Australia app on ChatGPT, which then presents relevant flight options alongside Velocity Frequent Flyer Reward Seat availability. This development is poised to revolutionise the way Australians search, plan, and book their journeys by embedding conversational artificial intelligence at the core of the aviation experience.
Enhancing the Flight Search Experience
The new feature significantly streamlines the flight search process by removing the need to navigate multiple web pages. Travellers can now discover destinations based on budget or departure city, identify the most cost-effective travel periods across various dates, and compare cash fares with Points + Pay options within a single interface. Additionally, users receive summaries of the lowest fares over multiple days, facilitating the identification of optimal travel times.
For members of the Velocity Frequent Flyer program, the update introduces the capability to instantly view Reward Seat availability across multiple dates and compare Points, Points + Pay, or cash fares in one consolidated view. This enhancement is designed to simplify the redemption process and unlock greater value for loyalty members.
Strategic Collaboration and Industry Implications
Virgin Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Dave Emerson, described the launch as a significant milestone for both the airline and its loyalty program. He emphasised that the collaboration with OpenAI provides customers with a faster, more intuitive way to plan and book trips within a platform already widely used. Emerson highlighted the added benefit for Velocity members, who can now locate Reward Seats directly within ChatGPT, making it easier than ever to redeem Points on flights.
This partnership builds upon Virgin Australia’s initial collaboration with OpenAI, announced in November 2025. OpenAI reports that approximately half of Australia’s adult population now engages with ChatGPT on a weekly basis, underscoring the growing integration of AI tools into everyday life.
Despite the promising prospects, the adoption of ChatGPT for flight searches presents challenges. Ensuring the accuracy and reliability of AI-provided flight information remains critical, alongside managing customer expectations for a seamless and natural conversational experience. Virgin Australia must also address potential privacy concerns related to data usage within the AI platform.
Market reactions to the launch are anticipated to be favourable, with expectations of increased customer engagement and satisfaction driven by this innovative application of AI. Competitors may respond by adopting similar technologies or enhancing their digital services to maintain competitiveness.
The ChatGPT integration complements Virgin Australia’s broader digital strategy, which includes plans to halve airport check-in times through mobile app enhancements. Collectively, these initiatives aim to reduce friction in the travel experience and deliver smarter, more personalised tools for customers.
As conversational AI becomes increasingly embedded in daily life, Virgin Australia’s initiative marks a new chapter in how Australians plan and book their travel.
