Aviation Industry Encourages Youth Innovation in 15th National Travel Essay Competition

Aviation Industry Champions Youth Innovation at 15th National Travel Essay Competition
Leading figures from Nigeria’s aviation sector, regulatory authorities, and young innovators convened in Lagos for the grand finale of the 15th Annual National Travel Essay Competition (NTEC 2026) alongside the Air Transport Youth Empowerment Summit (YES). The event, held on May 30, 2026, at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Annex at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, marked a significant milestone in fifteen years of dedicated efforts to identify and nurture emerging talent within the country’s aerospace industry. Organised by Travel & Business News, the summit underscored the critical role of youth-driven innovation and leadership in shaping the future of aviation in Nigeria.
Empowering Youth Amid Technological Change
Under the theme “Soaring Beyond Limits: Youth Innovation and Leadership in Aviation,” the summit brought together students, educators, regulators, and industry stakeholders to explore strategies for empowering young people in an era of rapid technological advancement. Dr. Gbenga Olowo, Chairman of Sabre Central and West Africa, represented by Sabre’s Marketing and Business Relationship Manager, Mr. Nurudeen Adeokin, reflected on the competition’s 15-year journey as a testament to sustained investment in human capital development. He emphasized that the future of aviation depends not only on infrastructure but also on the creativity and boldness of young innovators prepared to embrace transformative change.
Olowo highlighted Sabre’s ongoing commitment to talent development through academic partnerships and corporate social responsibility initiatives. He urged participants to prepare for an aviation landscape increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, automation, and data intelligence. Nevertheless, he acknowledged the challenges inherent in fostering youth innovation, including securing adequate funding, ensuring alignment with industry standards and regulations, and strengthening collaboration between academia and the aviation industry.
Industry Perspectives and Calls to Action
The Director-General of the NCAA, Capt. Chris Najomo, represented by Deputy Manager of Public Relations, Mrs. Carol Adekotujo, connected the summit’s theme to current industry developments such as the expansion of airline fleets under the Cape Town Convention. Najomo encouraged aspiring aerospace professionals to seek practical experience through workshops and mentorship programmes, emphasizing the importance of expertise in emerging technologies like autonomous aircraft systems, electric-powered planes, and sustainable aviation fuels. He stressed that overcoming industry barriers requires determination and ambition, alongside a willingness to adapt to the evolving demands of global aviation.
Addressing the summit on behalf of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Assistant Comptroller General (Narcotics) Mrs. Rita Geh, representing Chairman Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), underscored the importance of maintaining a drug-free lifestyle for aviation professionals. Marwa highlighted substance abuse prevention as essential to ensuring safety and professionalism in aviation, given the high levels of concentration required in operations. Through the agency’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, he encouraged participants to become advocates for mental well-being and drug abuse prevention, thereby maximizing their creative potential.
Competition Highlights and Industry Impact
The event’s focal point was the essay competition, which attracted vigorous participation from students across the country. Secondary school entrants addressed the topic “The Impact of Social Media on Air Transport Safety,” while tertiary students explored “Ending Luggage Tag Swapping in Drug Trafficking at Nigerian Airports.” Among the secondary school participants, Oluwafemi Joshua Oluwaseyifunmi of Abesan Senior High School, Abesan Estate, Ipaja, distinguished himself as a standout competitor.
Industry observers suggest that initiatives such as the NTEC and YES summit are likely to stimulate greater interest in sustainable aviation technologies and accelerate a shift toward youth-led innovation. The success of these programmes may inspire other stakeholders within the sector to launch similar competitions aimed at attracting young talent and fostering technological advancement, thereby invigorating Nigeria’s aviation landscape.
