Joby and Metropolis to Develop 25 Vertiport Sites Across the U.S.
Joby Aviation, Inc. (NYSE: JOBY), a prominent developer of electric air taxis, has announced a strategic partnership with Metropolis Technologies, Inc. to establish 25 vertiport sites throughout the United States. This collaboration seeks to capitalize on Metropolis’ extensive network of over 4,200 parking locations and its advanced artificial intelligence recognition technology to integrate vertiports into both new and existing facilities. The initiative aims to create seamless mobility hubs that effectively connect air and ground transportation, enhancing urban travel infrastructure.
Leveraging Infrastructure and Technology for Urban Air Mobility
Metropolis, following its $1.5 billion acquisition of SP+ and a $1.6 billion Series D financing round, now operates the largest parking network in North America and provides aviation services at more than 350 locations. Central to the vertiport integration will be Metropolis’ AI-driven computer vision and biometric technologies, designed to streamline the customer experience from curbside to flight. Additionally, the partnership will utilize Metropolis’ Bags Inc. subsidiary to offer VIP baggage handling services for Joby’s Blade Urban Air Mobility operations in the New York City area. This service is intended to enable passengers to bypass traffic congestion and airport delays by facilitating five-minute flights between Manhattan and major airports.
JoeBen Bevirt, CEO and founder of Joby, highlighted the importance of connectivity in urban air mobility, stating, “For air taxis to deliver on their promise of seamless urban travel, they must connect directly with the existing ground transportation ecosystem. By leveraging existing parking infrastructure to create mobility hubs, we can deliver on our vision of seamless connectivity for our customers and also maximize the value of those sites without needing to build infrastructure from scratch.”
Challenges and Competitive Landscape
Despite the promising outlook, the plan faces considerable challenges. The advanced air mobility sector remains in its infancy, and the deployment of vertiports will require navigating complex regulatory frameworks, managing significant infrastructure investments, and ensuring compliance with stringent safety standards. Investor skepticism persists due to the nascent nature of the market and the substantial capital demands involved.
Competition within the sector is intensifying, with companies such as Archer Aviation pursuing their own urban air mobility strategies. The competitive environment has already resulted in legal disputes; Joby recently filed a lawsuit against Archer, alleging corporate espionage. This underscores the high stakes and potential for further litigation as companies vie to secure market share in this emerging industry.
