Airbus Launches HTeaming: A Modular Crewed-Uncrewed Aviation System
Airbus Helicopters has unveiled HTeaming, an innovative modular system that enables helicopter crews to directly control Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) from the cockpit. Announced ahead of the Paris Air Show, this development marks a significant advancement in the integration of crewed and uncrewed aviation technologies.
System Design and Capabilities
The initial iteration of HTeaming is designed to operate either as a standalone solution or be seamlessly integrated into existing helicopter mission systems. At the Paris Air Show, Airbus will showcase the standalone configuration, which features a tablet-based human-machine interface, specialized UAS management software, a modem, and four antennas mounted on the helicopter. The system prioritizes ease of use for standard helicopter crews, aiming to reduce operational workload while expanding mission capabilities.
HTeaming’s modular architecture supports future upgrades and the addition of new functionalities. The system has already undergone flight testing, including a notable demonstration in May 2025 involving a Spanish Navy H135 helicopter paired with an Airbus Flexrotor UAS. Airbus plans to conduct further trials with various helicopter and UAS platforms in the coming months to validate interoperability and performance.
Victor Gerin Roze, head of UAS at Airbus Helicopters, emphasized the system’s versatility, stating, “Building on our experience as both a helicopter and UAS manufacturer and our extensive know-how as system integrators, we are offering a system that is both modular and agnostic. HTeaming is a solution that has been developed to be easily integrated on any type of helicopter and to take control of any type of UAS. It will be available for helicopter operators from 2026.”
Strategic Implications and Industry Context
Airbus views UAS as force multipliers that enhance helicopter mission efficiency and safety by leveraging the sensors and effectors of uncrewed platforms. The company has conducted multiple flight tests with H135, H145, and H130 helicopters in conjunction with various UAS, efforts that have laid the groundwork for the HTeaming system. Alongside the standalone version, Airbus intends to progressively introduce integrated solutions across its helicopter product range.
Despite its potential, HTeaming faces several challenges before achieving widespread adoption. Regulatory approval remains a critical obstacle, as aviation authorities evaluate the safety and integration of crewed-uncrewed operations. Public acceptance of increased automation and the presence of uncrewed systems in shared airspace also presents a significant consideration. Furthermore, ensuring seamless integration with existing air traffic management systems will be essential to maintain operational safety and efficiency.
Market reception is anticipated to be particularly strong within defense and security sectors, where advanced operational flexibility is highly valued. The introduction of HTeaming may prompt competitors such as Boeing and Sikorsky to accelerate their own crewed-uncrewed teaming initiatives, potentially through partnerships with technology firms to enhance their capabilities.
Scheduled for commercial release in 2026, HTeaming positions Airbus at the forefront of modular, interoperable crewed-uncrewed aviation solutions, aligning with the industry’s broader shift toward more integrated and autonomous operations.
