Experts Highlight Turning Point for India’s Aerospace and Aviation Sector at FOAA Conference
India’s aerospace and aviation sector is poised at a critical juncture, with industry leaders and policymakers projecting significant growth fueled by advancements in technology, expansion of manufacturing capabilities, and strengthening global collaborations. At the International Conference on Future of Aviation and Aerospace (FOAA) held in Bengaluru, experts underscored that the sector’s future trajectory will be shaped by strategic emphasis on defence manufacturing, artificial intelligence (AI), and high-value engineering services.
Strategic Shifts and Industry Priorities
The conference, hosted by the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore in partnership with TBS Education, convened leading executives, innovators, and policymakers from across the aviation and aerospace ecosystem. Speakers stressed the imperative for India to transition beyond its traditional role as an assembly hub, advocating for a greater focus on indigenous design, engineering, and lifecycle services such as maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO). This shift is deemed essential to securing long-term competitiveness on the global stage.
G Shainesh, Co-chair of the conference, described the sector as being at a decisive crossroads, where current decisions will significantly influence India’s global positioning in aerospace and aviation. His counterpart, S Raghunath, emphasized the importance of cultivating domestic design capabilities and enhancing India’s footprint in MRO and lifecycle intelligence, rather than remaining predominantly an outsourcing destination.
Challenges and Opportunities Amid Growth
While the aviation sector has experienced a surge in demand, creating substantial industrial opportunities, experts cautioned that regulatory frameworks must evolve in tandem with rapid technological progress. The industry continues to face challenges such as supply chain disruptions, which have caused delays in aircraft procurement, alongside heightened regulatory scrutiny. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) reported rising revenues and a robust long-term order book, yet the broader sector still contends with infrastructure and policy constraints that could hinder sustained growth.
International cooperation emerged as a prominent theme during the conference. Annett Baessler highlighted the strengthening aviation ties between India and Europe, referencing India’s memorandum of understanding with Lufthansa and expanding bilateral collaborations. She noted that India has become one of Airbus’s largest engineering hubs outside Europe, contributing significantly to commercial, defence, and space programmes. Baessler also pointed to India’s increasing aircraft orders and the government’s Make in India initiative as indicators of the country’s growing competitiveness in aerospace manufacturing. The proposed EU–India Free Trade Agreement was identified as a potential catalyst for deeper cooperation, particularly in areas such as MRO services, workforce development, and industrial integration.
Future Outlook and Industry Evolution
Industry leaders acknowledged the exponential growth India’s aviation sector has achieved over the past two decades in safety, technology, and customer service. Despite this progress, aviation penetration remains relatively low, indicating considerable potential for expansion. Sunil Bhaskaran highlighted India’s advantage in scaling the aviation value chain through the adoption of next-generation technologies, including AI-driven systems and digital innovation.
The competitive landscape is also evolving, with companies like Jaykay Enterprises acquiring defence manufacturing businesses to bolster capabilities in missile systems. As India’s travel sector continues to grow, persistent infrastructure and policy challenges underscore the need for ongoing reform and investment.
Experts concluded that India’s aerospace and aviation sector is entering a transformative phase. The interplay of manufacturing, design, engineering services, and global partnerships is expected to define its future, even as the industry navigates supply chain complexities and regulatory hurdles.
