Pardoned Nikola Founder Seeks $1 Billion for AI-Powered Autonomous Jets

Pardoned Nikola Founder Pursues $1 Billion Investment for AI-Driven Autonomous Jets
Trevor Milton, the founder of the electric truck company Nikola, is attempting a remarkable return to the technology sector nearly a year after receiving a presidential pardon from Donald Trump for his 2022 fraud conviction. Milton is now seeking $1 billion in funding to develop AI-powered autonomous jets through a new venture named SyberJet.
From Controversy to Aviation Ambitions
Milton’s reemergence follows a dramatic fall from grace. He was convicted on three counts of fraud for misleading investors about Nikola’s technology, including orchestrating a video that falsely showed a truck prototype operating autonomously. After serving time in prison, his sentence was nullified by the presidential pardon, a move that sparked intense debate within venture capital and legal communities. Nikola’s story has since become emblematic of the risks associated with startup hype and investor deception.
Undeterred, Milton is now focusing on the aviation sector, a field that presents even greater technical and regulatory challenges. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, he acknowledged the difficulty of the endeavor, stating, “Autonomous planes will be 10 times harder than Nikola ever was.” His new project revolves around SyberJet Aircraft, an aviation company he acquired alongside an investment group. The company aims to develop sophisticated AI systems capable of piloting aircraft without human input—a milestone that has so far eluded major aerospace players such as Boeing and Airbus, despite their substantial investments in autonomous flight research.
Navigating the Complexities of Autonomous Aviation
Milton’s prior experience in overcoming regulatory and technological barriers in the electric vehicle industry may provide useful insights as he ventures into autonomous aviation. Nevertheless, the aviation industry is governed by rigorous safety standards and regulatory oversight, factors that have thus far prevented the deployment of fully autonomous commercial aircraft.
Market response to Milton’s renewed ambitions remains cautious, with competitors yet to issue public statements. The aviation sector is currently experiencing significant advancements in autonomous vehicle technology, and Milton’s bold initiative could either catalyze a new wave of innovation or reinforce existing skepticism, depending on SyberJet’s progress.
As Milton seeks to secure $1 billion in funding, the industry will be closely monitoring whether his second attempt can transcend the controversies of his past and realize the potential of AI-powered flight.
