Qatar Airways Confirms Continued Partnership with Airbus Amid Ongoing Jet Deliveries
Renewed Collaboration Between Qatar Airways and Airbus
Airbus is regaining strategic momentum with Qatar Airways at a critical juncture for both delivery schedules and competitive positioning within the global aviation sector. Shortly after assuming his role, Qatar Airways Group CEO Hamad Al-Khater made his inaugural overseas visit to Airbus headquarters in Toulouse, where he met with Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury. Al-Khater described their January discussions as “brilliant” and “fantastic.” Subsequently, Faury traveled to Doha accompanied by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for further talks, signaling a renewed and strengthened commitment between the airline and the manufacturer.
This enhanced engagement follows the high-profile dispute in 2022 concerning alleged paint degradation on Qatar Airways’ A350 jets, which had led Airbus to cancel the airline’s A321 orders. The conflict was resolved through a 2023 settlement that reinstated those orders, underscoring Airbus’s integral role in Qatar Airways’ long-term fleet strategy. Currently, Airbus aircraft constitute approximately half of Qatar Airways’ fleet, reflecting the manufacturer’s central importance to the airline’s operations.
Fleet Expansion and Operational Focus
Qatar Airways now has over 60 Airbus jets on order, including additional A350 widebodies and A321LR narrowbodies scheduled for delivery this year—a timeline confirmed during the recent meetings in Toulouse. The first batch of A321s is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter, potentially enabling Qatar Airways to expand its network into secondary European destinations and emerging Chinese cities. Al-Khater emphasized that these narrowbodies will introduce new business and economy cabin configurations, describing the aircraft as a potential “game changer” for network flexibility.
Attention also remains on the Rolls-Royce engines powering the A350-1000 fleet. Despite public concerns raised by Emirates President Tim Clark regarding the durability of the XWB-97 engine variant, Al-Khater expressed confidence in Rolls-Royce’s capacity to address what he termed a “slightly acute challenge,” citing recent reassurances from the engine manufacturer’s leadership.
Broader Fleet Strategy and Market Context
Qatar Airways’ fleet strategy extends beyond Airbus. The airline plans to retire older aircraft as it aims to grow its fleet to nearly 400 jets by 2040, with the current average fleet age standing at approximately 10 years. Boeing is set to commence deliveries of its 777X widebodies next year, following Qatar Airways’ record order for 210 twin-aisle jets. Al-Khater highlighted improvements under Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg, noting increased confidence in Boeing’s delivery reliability.
These developments occur amid intensifying competition between Airbus and Boeing. Airbus continues to dominate single-aisle sales, particularly with its innovative A321XLR, which is reshaping market expectations and production processes. However, Boeing’s recent financial turnaround and accelerated production rates signal a resurgence, especially in the narrowbody segment where Airbus has maintained a lead. The Federal Aviation Administration’s recent lifting of production caps on the 737 MAX, coupled with Boeing’s renewed focus on safety and efficiency, further alter the competitive landscape.
For investors and industry observers, the ability of both Airbus and Boeing to maintain delivery discipline and engine reliability will be pivotal in shaping capacity growth and competitive dynamics in one of the world’s most strategically significant long-haul markets.
