SAA Highlights AI Potential in Partnership with Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce
Embracing Artificial Intelligence in Aviation
South African Airways (SAA) emphasized the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the aviation industry during the Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce’s July 2025 Breakfast Forum at Eko Hotel and Suites. Hosting the event, SAA brought together industry leaders to explore the theme “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and The Future of Work,” focusing on the opportunities and challenges presented by AI as the airline seeks to maintain its competitive edge in a rapidly evolving sector.
Ohis Ehimiaghe, SAA’s Regional Manager for Africa, the Middle East, and the Indian Ocean, outlined the airline’s strategic commitment to embedding AI technologies within its operations, particularly in customer service. He highlighted how AI-driven virtual assistants and chatbots are revolutionizing passenger interactions by simplifying tasks such as managing bookings, issuing boarding passes, and handling inquiries. Ehimiaghe further noted that AI-powered personalization is poised to enhance the travel experience by offering tailored options and entertainment aligned with individual preferences.
The forum also addressed the critical need for AI-related skills within the aviation workforce. Eunice King, Vice President of Digital Transformation & Innovation at Arravo, stressed that professionals equipped with AI expertise will hold a distinct advantage. She observed that as AI automates routine tasks, workers must cultivate new competencies that complement and augment AI capabilities.
Navigating Challenges and Strategic Growth
Despite its ambitions, SAA faces significant challenges in its AI integration and broader strategic initiatives. The airline’s partnership with the Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce must contend with Nigeria’s economic vulnerabilities, as underscored by a recent FSDH report highlighting the country’s exposure to external shocks. Furthermore, SAA confronts intensifying competition in technology adoption and talent acquisition from global firms such as Accenture, which are expanding their AI operations in the region.
Geopolitical factors also pose potential risks to market dynamics. Criticism of South Africa’s policies by former U.S. President Donald Trump has raised concerns regarding diplomatic relations and investor confidence, which could affect cross-border business collaborations.
On the technological front, SAA is reportedly exploring partnerships with leading AI companies like Broadcom. While Broadcom’s stock has experienced notable gains, the latest analysis from AInvest points to inherent risks associated with such investments. These collaborations could accelerate SAA’s digital transformation but will require prudent risk management.
Looking ahead, Ehimiaghe announced plans to expand SAA’s route network, including new services to Maputo and Gaborone, alongside the introduction of three additional international routes in 2026. The airline aims to grow its fleet to 50 aircraft over the next five years to support these expansion efforts.
Kemi Leke-Bamtefa, SAA’s Country Manager, reaffirmed the airline’s dedication to empowering its partners by facilitating forums that keep stakeholders informed about industry trends and challenges. She emphasized the airline’s commitment to equipping partners with the foresight and skills necessary to sustain and grow their businesses amid an evolving industry landscape.
With a legacy spanning 91 years and recognition as Africa’s most awarded airline by Skytrax, SAA is positioning itself to lead the region’s aviation sector into a new era defined by AI innovation and strategic collaboration.
