William 'Bill' Amorty Inducted into Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame
The City of Superior Common Council recently honored William “Bill” Amorty with a surprise commendation in recognition of his induction into the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame. The ceremony took place on October 21, 2017, in Oshkosh. During the council meeting’s proclamations and commendations segment, the mayor read a detailed proclamation outlining Amorty’s extensive contributions to the field of aviation. Since 1969, Amorty has served as the manager of Richard I. Bong Airport, and his professional credentials include work as an airframe and power plant mechanic with inspection authorization, as well as service as an FAA-designated pilot examiner. Additionally, he has owned Twin Ports Flying Service since 1966.
A Lifetime Dedicated to Aviation
The proclamation traced Amorty’s aviation journey from its beginnings with his first flight lesson on August 5, 1962. He soloed approximately one month later and earned his private pilot certificate in September 1963, eventually attaining airline transport pilot status. Over the course of his career, Amorty has trained more than 3,000 pilots and administered nearly 4,000 flight tests. His dedication to pilot education and safety has earned him widespread respect within the aviation community. Council members also commended his efforts to enhance airport facilities and promote aviation throughout the local community.
Amorty accepted the commendation with brief remarks, expressing gratitude to the council for the recognition. No formal council action was required beyond this public acknowledgment.
Significance of the Induction
Amorty’s induction into the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame not only honors his personal achievements but also serves to highlight Wisconsin’s rich aviation history. This recognition has the potential to increase public interest in the state’s aviation heritage and may contribute to tourism related to the Hall of Fame. However, such honors can also present challenges, including managing expectations within the aviation community and ensuring that Amorty’s contributions are accurately represented. Furthermore, this accolade may encourage other aviation professionals to seek similar recognition, potentially intensifying competition for inclusion in halls of fame.
Amorty’s career exemplifies decades of unwavering commitment to aviation at both the local and state levels. His induction marks a significant milestone for the Superior community and underscores his lasting impact on the field.
