ACI Europe Urges Coordinated Response to Emerging AI Cyber Threats
Rising AI-Driven Cybersecurity Risks in Aviation
ACI Europe has issued a call to action for airports, technology providers, and aviation stakeholders to strengthen cybersecurity defenses amid the growing threat posed by advanced artificial intelligence systems. In an open letter, Director General Olivier Jankovec warned that the aviation sector is increasingly vulnerable to what he termed “Mythos”-class AI models—sophisticated systems capable of autonomously detecting and exploiting security weaknesses at an unprecedented speed and scale.
Jankovec emphasized that Europe’s airports operate within a highly interconnected ecosystem that extends beyond airport operators and airlines to include ground handlers, industrial systems, cloud service providers, and a broad range of technology and service partners. This intricate network means that vulnerabilities in any segment of the supply chain can trigger widespread operational disruptions across the aviation industry.
The emergence of AI models such as Anthropic’s Mythos has heightened concerns due to their ability to identify software vulnerabilities more rapidly than traditional patching processes, outstripping current defensive measures. This rapid technological advancement has prompted regulatory bodies to urge critical infrastructure sectors to enhance their cybersecurity postures. For instance, the European Central Bank has called on euro area banks to prepare for AI-assisted cyberattacks, while in the United States, the government has faced criticism for diminishing the role of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency amid escalating threats.
ACI Europe’s Call for Ecosystem-Wide Cybersecurity Resilience
ACI Europe’s letter stresses the necessity of a unified, ecosystem-wide approach to cybersecurity resilience. The organization expects all stakeholders—including technology partners, managed service providers, and software suppliers supporting airport operations—to proactively address the emerging risks posed by AI-enabled cyber threats and to implement comprehensive mitigation strategies without delay.
Among the key recommendations are measures to reduce attack-surface exposure, reinforce identity management, and adopt network segmentation alongside zero-trust security principles. ACI Europe also advocates for risk-based vulnerability management frameworks that evaluate severity, exploit likelihood, exposure, and business impact to prioritize defensive actions effectively.
Jankovec further highlighted the critical importance of enhancing software supply chain security in alignment with the European Union’s forthcoming Cyber Resilience Act, scheduled to take effect in September 2027. He called for transparent vulnerability disclosure programs, efficient remediation processes, risk-based prioritization of corrective measures, and the establishment of Software Bills of Materials (SBOMs) to improve supply chain transparency.
Additional recommendations include the deployment of automated defensive security testing and the integration of advanced AI-based tools for vulnerability detection and remediation. The letter underscores the need to embed AI-enabled security solutions not only in new products and services but also through retrofit programs aimed at identifying and addressing existing vulnerabilities.
Concluding his statement, Jankovec reaffirmed the aviation sector’s historical capacity to adapt to evolving risks. He emphasized that cooperation, transparency, and shared responsibility across the entire ecosystem will be vital to effectively counter the next generation of AI-driven cyber threats.
