Aviation Capital Group Delivers First Airbus A220 to ITA Airways Amid Industry Challenges
Aviation Capital Group (ACG) has officially delivered its first Airbus A220-300 aircraft to ITA Airways, inaugurating a new leasing partnership between the U.S.-based lessor and the Italian national carrier. The aircraft was handed over from Airbus’s final assembly line in Mirabel, Quebec, and represents the first of five A220-300s scheduled to join ITA Airways under existing lease agreements. This delivery also marks the initial aircraft from ACG’s 2022 order of 20 A220s.
Tom Baker, Chief Executive Officer and President of ACG, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasizing the significance of supporting ITA Airways’ transition to sustainable A220 technology for its short- and medium-haul operations. He also highlighted the milestone for ACG in delivering the first new A220 from its recent order.
Integration into ITA Airways’ Fleet and Market Context
The newly delivered A220-300 will be incorporated into ITA Airways’ short- and medium-haul fleet, complementing the airline’s ongoing fleet renewal program and facilitating the gradual phase-out of older narrowbody aircraft. Currently, ITA Airways operates an all-Airbus fleet comprising 88 aircraft, including 18 A220s—divided between 10 A220-100s and 8 A220-300s.
This delivery arrives amid a period of uncertainty for the A220 program and the wider aviation industry. Airbus has recently reduced its A220 production targets, raising concerns about potential supply chain disruptions that may affect future deliveries to customers such as ITA Airways. Market conditions have also been volatile; for instance, IAG’s share price has declined due to softness in yields and passenger loads on transatlantic routes, factors that could influence ITA Airways’ financial performance as it seeks to expand its network.
Operational Challenges and Safety Considerations
Competitor airlines have adopted cautious stances regarding the A220’s operational reliability. Swiss International Air Lines, for example, has grounded its entire A220-100 fleet until at least 2027, reflecting ongoing concerns about the aircraft type. ITA Airways itself has recently come under operational scrutiny following a near-miss incident involving one of its aircraft and an American Airlines jet at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This incident underscores the critical importance of maintaining stringent safety standards as the airline continues to modernize its fleet.
Despite these challenges, both ACG and ITA Airways remain steadfast in their commitment to the A220 as a central element of their strategic plans. The aircraft’s fuel efficiency and reduced emissions are viewed as vital advantages in meeting sustainability objectives and enhancing competitiveness within the European short- and medium-haul market.
