Engine Failure Suspected in Wake County Plane Crash
Investigation Focuses on Possible Engine Malfunction
Authorities are investigating a suspected engine failure as the cause of a single-engine plane crash that occurred Wednesday in eastern Wake County. A family member of one of the two men aboard reported that the engine ceased functioning midflight. The sister of one occupant told ABC11 that her brother indicated the engine failed before the aircraft collided with storage tanks and trees, ultimately crashing just beyond the runway at Raleigh East Airport in Knightdale. Officials have yet to confirm this account.
John Nance, an aviation analyst with ABC News, explained that experienced pilots develop an intuitive sense of their aircraft’s condition, particularly the engine’s performance. “If it stops running, you’ve got to take immediate action,” he said. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is leading the investigation, with experts noting that if engine trouble is suspected, investigators will scrutinize fuel levels, maintenance records, and other relevant factors.
Details of the Crash and Ongoing Investigation
Flight records show that the aircraft, a Rainbow Cheetah XLS kit plane, departed from Cox Airfield in Apex with Luis Quijano and John Wellman on board. The plane crashed just south of the Raleigh East Airport runway, narrowly avoiding a nearby business that handles explosive materials. Aerial footage of the crash site revealed a broken wing. Both men were transported to WakeMed with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Quijano’s sister reported that he underwent surgery on Thursday morning.
The investigation is unfolding amid heightened scrutiny of aircraft maintenance and regulatory oversight within the aviation industry. Recent hearings by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) brought to light Boeing’s documentation of four prior failures in 2011 involving a component securing the MD-11’s engines to the wings. Despite these incidents, Boeing did not classify the issue as a safety concern. This revelation has raised broader questions about maintenance practices and oversight across the sector. Investigators found that infrequent maintenance schedules and a lack of awareness among mechanics regarding longstanding warnings contributed to the part’s failure. These findings have prompted increased market and regulatory attention on Boeing’s safety protocols, potentially impacting its reputation and stock performance. Competitors may also leverage such incidents to emphasize their own safety records and operational standards.
Broader Factors Under Review
As the Wake County investigation continues, authorities are expected to examine a wide range of factors beyond the reported engine failure. These include weather conditions at the time of the crash, the health and condition of the pilots, and the aircraft’s recent maintenance history. Nance emphasized the comprehensive nature of accident investigations, stating, “Even though the engine may have failed, they’ll be looking at everything, including weather, condition of the pilots, and the days before, and all sorts of things that are part of an accident investigation.”
Aviation experts also highlighted standard pilot procedures in the event of engine failure. Pilots are trained to maintain control of the aircraft by establishing a glide path and identifying a safe landing area before attempting to restart the engine. Nance explained, “Put it into a glide, with whatever altitude you have, a safe way of continuing to fly the airplane towards someplace. That’ll be the second thing, is looking around and figuring out, ‘Where can I put this aircraft down?’ And then, and only then, you get started trying to restart the engine.”
Authorities have not yet confirmed who was piloting the plane or the definitive cause of the crash. Meanwhile, Quijano’s family has expressed gratitude for his survival as the investigation proceeds.
