VAI Highlights Advances in Vertical Aviation at VERTICON 2026
A Showcase of Innovation and Industry Collaboration
VERTICON 2026, organized by Vertical Aviation International (VAI), convened 12,852 attendees at the Georgia World Congress Center from March 9 to 12, spotlighting significant advancements and ongoing challenges within the vertical aviation sector. The event emphasized critical themes such as enhancing safety, fostering workforce development, and promoting collaboration across the industry, while also addressing the shifting competitive dynamics that define the current landscape.
The exposition featured 684 exhibitors and displayed 64 aircraft across an expansive 280,000 square feet. Attendees engaged with a variety of interactive demonstrations, including a drone cage facilitating live indoor flights, which attracted operators, manufacturers, suppliers, regulators, and senior industry leaders alike. The educational program was comprehensive, offering 24 Elevation Courses led by industry experts, 66 Foundation Sessions eligible for FAA WINGS and AMT credits, 34 opportunities for Inspection Authorization (IA) renewal, and 30 technical briefings presented by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and other organizations.
Workforce development remained a central focus throughout the event. The Mil2Civ Workshop provided support for military personnel transitioning to civilian aviation careers, while the VAI Career Fair connected over 30 companies with prospective employees. Additionally, the Aerospace Maintenance Council’s 2026 Competition @ VERTICON featured 22 teams of aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs) competing in a series of skill-based challenges, underscoring the sector’s commitment to professional excellence.
Leadership Dialogue and Industry Challenges
A key moment of the conference was a fireside chat held on March 10, featuring VAI President and CEO François Lassale, European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Executive Director Florian Guillermet, and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Bryan Bedford. The discussion centered on maintaining trust and safety amid rapid technological innovation, optimizing the use of low-altitude airspace, and employing data-driven approaches to risk identification and mitigation. Lassale, VAI’s first international leader, stressed the necessity of industry unity and disciplined strategic planning as vertical aviation adapts to increasingly complex airspace environments. He remarked, “We will define this critical point in vertical aviation by uniting the industry and using shared data and disciplined strategy to guide decisions and policy engagement,” highlighting the importance of measurable safety outcomes and sustainable growth.
Despite these advances, VERTICON 2026 unfolded amid intensifying competition. Established manufacturers such as Airbus and Leonardo continue to dominate the market, accounting for over 90% of transactions in 2025. However, new entrants like Eve, showcasing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technology, signal a pivotal moment for the industry. Competitors are accelerating the development of autonomous and hybrid rotorcraft, with notable demonstrations including Black Hawk’s automated flight capabilities and Pratt & Whitney Canada’s PioneerLab Hybrid H145 project. The ongoing expansion of autonomous Black Hawk RUC-60 testing is anticipated to drive further innovation across the sector.
Industry Outlook and Future Events
Keynote addresses by Axios co-founder Mike Allen and retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Merry Tengesdal underscored the importance of professional excellence and innovation within vertical aviation. VAI President François Lassale concluded by emphasizing VERTICON’s role as a vital forum where the vertical aviation community convenes to conduct business, enhance skills, and advance safety. He noted that the event’s strong attendance and rich educational offerings reaffirm the industry’s resilience in the face of both opportunity and disruption.
Looking ahead, VAI announced that VERTICON 2027 will be held from March 15 to 18, 2027, in Anaheim, California, as the vertical aviation sector continues to navigate a rapidly evolving landscape.
