AerCap Cargo Delivers First Boeing 777-300ERSF to Fly Meta Amid Intensifying Market Competition
Dublin-based AerCap Holdings N.V. (NYSE: AER) has completed the delivery of the first Boeing 777-300ERSF converted freighter to Fly Meta Leasing Co., Ltd, a Hong Kong-based cargo leasing company. The handover took place on November 21, 2025, marking the initial installment of a three-aircraft order. The remaining two aircraft are scheduled for delivery in the second and fourth quarters of 2026. These freighters will be operated under a Crew Maintenance and Insurance (CMI) agreement by Air Atlanta Icelandic, flying under the Hungary Air brand.
The Boeing 777-300ERSF: A New Benchmark in Widebody Freighters
The Boeing 777-300ERSF, often referred to as “The Big Twin,” represents the aviation industry’s first passenger-to-freighter conversion program for the 777-300ER model. The aircraft received certification from both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) on August 31, 2025, and entered commercial service by mid-September. Rich Greener, Head of AerCap Cargo, emphasized the aircraft’s advantages, noting that it offers 25% more capacity than smaller twin-engine long-haul freighters. He highlighted its cost efficiencies, extended range, and operational commonality as key benefits. Greener also underscored the significance of the partnership with Fly Meta and Air Atlanta Icelandic, pointing out that Fly Meta is the first operator to deploy this aircraft type on routes connecting the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region with Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA).
Helen Chen, CEO of Fly Meta, described the delivery as a pivotal moment in the company’s strategic expansion of its widebody freighter fleet. She stated that the new aircraft would enhance Fly Meta’s cargo corridor capabilities and broaden its service offerings in global e-commerce, express, and specialty cargo markets. Chen reaffirmed the company’s commitment to developing a modern and scalable widebody freighter platform centered on the 777-300ERSF, Boeing 747-400F, and other forthcoming aircraft. She also indicated plans for further capacity growth in 2026 to meet increasing demand across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
Market Dynamics and Competitive Pressures
The delivery of the 777-300ERSF to Fly Meta occurs amid intensifying competition and evolving dynamics within the global air cargo market. Emirates recently announced an order for 65 additional Boeing 777-9 jets, signaling a strategic push to expand capacity and improve operational efficiency. Concurrently, Qatar Airways has experienced delays in receiving its 777 freighter conversions due to disruptions caused by recent U.S. government shutdowns, potentially affecting delivery timelines and competitive positioning. Industry analysts suggest that these developments may prompt carriers to leverage their respective delivery schedules and strategic initiatives to secure market advantages.
Investor sentiment in the cargo leasing sector has also been unsettled by the FBI’s recent indictment of 777 Partners on fraud charges, raising concerns about the stability and transparency of similar ventures within the industry.
