Air Lease Removes All Seven A350F Orders from Airbus Backlog
Air Lease Corporation, a prominent US aircraft lessor and launch customer for the Airbus A350 freighter, has removed all seven of its A350F orders from Airbus’s backlog, according to the manufacturer’s latest order data. The original order, placed at the 2021 Dubai Air Show, was part of a broader agreement encompassing 111 Airbus aircraft, with deliveries for the freighters anticipated to commence around 2026.
Implications for Airbus and the A350F Program
The cancellation of these orders presents a significant challenge for Airbus, as it reduces the firm commitments for the A350F and may indicate a softening demand for the new freighter model. Market analysts warn that such developments could undermine investor confidence, potentially exerting downward pressure on Airbus’s stock price. Furthermore, this shift creates an opening for competitors, notably Boeing, to consolidate their position in the cargo aircraft sector. Industry experts suggest that other lessors and airlines might now reevaluate their own commitments to the A350F, which could influence Airbus’s future sales strategies and negotiation dynamics.
Despite this setback, Airbus’s backlog for the A350F still shows 66 firm orders as of mid-2024. Notably, Saudi lessor AviLease has committed to 10 firm aircraft following its agreement to acquire 22 A350Fs announced at the Paris Air Show in June. The A350F remains under development, with entry into service projected for the second half of 2027.
FlightGlobal has reached out to Air Lease for comment regarding the removal of the orders but has yet to receive a response.
Broader Order Book Developments
In addition to the changes in the A350F backlog, Airbus has formally recorded several other orders announced at the Paris Air Show. These include 25 A350-1000s for Riyadh Air, 10 A350-1000s for Starlux, 20 A330neos for VietJet, 30 A320neo-family jets for AviLease, 27 A320neo-family jets for All Nippon Airways, and 40 A220s for Polish flag carrier LOT. Airbus has also logged 20 A330neos for Malaysia’s MAB Leasing and 21 for IAG, the parent company of Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Level, all operators of the A330.
For the first half of 2024, Airbus recorded net orders totaling 402 aircraft and delivered 306, compared with 323 deliveries during the same period in 2023.
