Airbus Approaches Completion of Global A320 Safety Upgrade

Airbus Nears Completion of Global A320 Safety Upgrade
Airbus is approaching the conclusion of a comprehensive global safety upgrade for its A320-family aircraft, following an Alert Operators Transmission (AOT) issued on November 28. The directive was prompted by the discovery of a vulnerability that could allow solar radiation to interfere with flight control data, potentially causing rare but serious malfunctions under specific atmospheric conditions.
Progress and Industry Response
As of December 1, 2025, Airbus reports that nearly all of the approximately 6,000 affected aircraft worldwide have undergone the mandatory software update. Fewer than 100 jets remain to be modified, with Airbus collaborating closely with operators to ensure these aircraft return to service promptly. Several major airlines, including Lufthansa, British Airways, easyJet, JetBlue, Qantas, and IndiGo, have confirmed full compliance, enabling them to resume normal operations. IndiGo, for instance, has completed the update on 160 out of its 200 mandated aircraft.
However, the response from airlines has varied. While some carriers have managed the upgrade with minimal operational disruption, others are still assessing the directive and anticipate limited delays as they complete the process. Jetstar has experienced significant travel disruptions, with the safety recall necessitating the grounding of flights and the cancellation of numerous travel plans. Maintenance teams across the industry are prioritizing the software installation during scheduled ground time to mitigate delays.
Coordination and Outlook
Airbus has highlighted the rapid and coordinated response from airlines and regulators, which has accelerated the rollout and allowed the vast majority of affected aircraft to return to service swiftly. The manufacturer confirmed that no in-service aircraft exhibiting the issue remain operational, and the upgrade process has been carefully managed to minimize scheduling impacts.
With the final phase of the upgrade underway, Airbus expects the remaining aircraft to be updated within days, marking the near completion of one of the largest safety enhancements in the company’s history.
