Airport Honour Awards 2026 Introduce New Start-Up Category

Airport Honour Awards 2026 Introduce New Start-Up Category Amid Industry Transformation
The Airport Honour Awards 2026 have officially opened for entries, unveiling a significant addition to their roster of accolades: the IAR’s Start-up to Watch Award. This new category is designed to recognise emerging start-ups that are developing innovative solutions tailored to the evolving needs of the airport sector. Now in its latest edition, the awards continue to celebrate excellence across 11 categories, encompassing operations, leadership, innovation, and passenger experience, while expanding their scope to include the dynamic contributions of early-stage companies.
Embracing Innovation: The Start-Up to Watch Award
The introduction of the start-up category reflects the airport industry’s ongoing transformation and the increasing role that start-ups play in driving progress. These young companies are addressing critical challenges such as operational efficiency, resilience, inclusivity, and sustainability, all of which are central to the future of airports worldwide. By spotlighting these innovators, the awards acknowledge the shifting landscape where traditional airport operators and new entrants coexist and compete.
This development arrives at a time when established airports, including recent award recipients like London Heathrow and Adelaide Airport, may perceive the new category as both a challenge and an opportunity. Industry experts anticipate that these airports might respond by launching their own innovation initiatives or reinforcing their leadership positions to maintain competitive advantage. Meanwhile, the start-up award offers emerging companies a valuable platform for recognition and increased visibility within the global airport ecosystem.
Eligibility and Judging Criteria
To maintain a fair and transparent evaluation process, the IAR’s Start-up to Watch Award has established clear eligibility requirements. Participating companies must be less than five years old, employ fewer than 50 people worldwide, and be at the pre-seed, seed, or Series A funding stage, with those beyond Series A excluded. Additionally, annual revenue must not exceed £8 million. Entrants are expected to demonstrate active engagement with the airport sector, whether through accelerator programmes, pilot projects, or partnerships aimed at testing innovative solutions.
Submissions must present genuinely novel technologies, products, or processes specifically developed by the company. Solutions that merely repackage or resell existing offerings are deemed ineligible. The innovations should address key airport-related areas such as passenger experience, operations, sustainability, digitalisation, safety, or asset management.
The organisers acknowledge the challenges inherent in integrating a start-up category alongside established players. Ensuring a level playing field, setting rigorous judging standards, and managing diverse stakeholder expectations will be critical to the award’s success. Reactions within the market are expected to vary, with some airports viewing the category competitively, while others may embrace collaboration with start-ups.
Award Categories and Judging Panel
The 2026 Airport Honour Awards will continue to recognise excellence across a broad spectrum of categories, including the Sustainable Airport Award, Baggage Innovation Award, Airport Innovation Award, Accessible Airport Award, Passenger Experience Award, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award, Airport Security Award, Airport Leader of the Future, Airport Leader of the Year, and Airport of the Year, alongside the new start-up category.
Entries will be assessed by the International Airport Review’s Advisory Board, comprising industry leaders such as Thomas Romig of Masterise Group, Tyronia Smith from Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta Airport, Chris Woodroofe of Manchester Airport, and Brian Cobb. Their expertise will guide the selection of winners who exemplify leadership and innovation in the global airport sector.
With the addition of the IAR’s Start-up to Watch Award, the Airport Honour Awards 2026 underscore the sector’s commitment to fostering innovation and adapting to a rapidly changing environment, setting the stage for enhanced competition and collaboration across the international airport community.
