Aman Wole Gurmu Appointed CEO of Zambia Airways
Lusaka, August 17, 2026 — Zambia Airways has announced the appointment of Aman Wole Gurmu as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective August 1, 2026. The airline’s Board of Directors emphasized that this leadership change reflects a commitment to strengthening the carrier’s competitive position, safety standards, and customer service as it continues to develop its national and regional presence.
Extensive Experience and Strategic Vision
Gurmu brings to Zambia Airways over 19 years of experience with Ethiopian Airlines Group, where he held several senior roles spanning aviation operations, commercial management, and international markets. His previous appointments include Regional Director for Mainland China and Mongolia, Regional Director for France and the Maghreb, Area Manager for Zambia, and Director of Sales based in Addis Ababa. His prior tenure in Zambia equips him with valuable insight into the local aviation landscape, an asset that is expected to inform his leadership approach.
Upon his appointment, Gurmu expressed his honor at leading Zambia Airways during a critical phase of growth. He outlined his immediate priorities as enhancing safety protocols, achieving operational excellence, investing in workforce development, forging strategic partnerships, and elevating the customer experience.
Continuity and Partnership with Ethiopian Airlines
Gurmu’s appointment marks the third consecutive leadership transition involving executives from Ethiopian Airlines since Zambia Airways’ relaunch in December 2021. He succeeds Thomas Gabreyohannes Woldesenbet, who served as CEO from April 2024. The airline has not disclosed Woldesenbet’s subsequent role. This succession underscores the close collaboration between Zambia Airways and Ethiopian Airlines, with the latter providing both managerial expertise and operational support.
Zambia Airways (2014) Limited is majority-owned by Zambia’s Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), holding a 55 percent stake, while Ethiopian Airlines Group owns 45 percent. This partnership extends beyond ownership to include comprehensive training and operational cooperation. In April 2026, five Zambia Airways pilots completed type-rating and upgrade training through Ethiopian Airlines, enhancing the airline’s capacity to operate its Boeing 737 and Q400 fleet effectively.
Challenges and Prospects Ahead
As Gurmu assumes leadership, he faces the challenge of steering Zambia Airways toward financial stability, improving operational efficiency, and expanding its route network to strengthen regional and international connectivity. Market response to his appointment has been largely positive, with stakeholders expressing confidence in his leadership and strategic vision. While competitor reactions remain uncertain, industry analysts anticipate heightened competition as Zambia Airways seeks to consolidate and grow its market share.
Founded through a partnership between the Zambian government and Ethiopian Airlines, Zambia Airways resumed commercial operations in December 2021, initially focusing on domestic and regional routes. The airline currently serves destinations across Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya, and Tanzania, including Lusaka, Ndola, Livingstone, Solwezi, Harare, Johannesburg, Nairobi, and Dar es Salaam. The Lusaka–Dar es Salaam route, launched in June 2024, has further enhanced connectivity between Southern and East Africa.
Despite its ambitions, Zambia Airways remains a relatively small regional carrier, operating a fleet of just two aircraft. The airline’s future trajectory will depend on Gurmu’s ability to navigate operational and financial challenges while capitalizing on emerging growth opportunities within a competitive aviation market.
