Aviation Scholarship and Entrepreneur Contest Open to Pennsylvania Students

Aviation Scholarship and Entrepreneur Contest Open to Pennsylvania Students
Aerium, in collaboration with its community partners, has announced two new initiatives designed to support Pennsylvania high school and college students pursuing careers in aviation, aerospace, and entrepreneurship. These initiatives—a scholarship program and a statewide entrepreneurship contest—are intended to encourage innovation and nurture the next generation of industry leaders.
Scholarship Program for Aviation Students
Applications for Aerium’s 2026-27 student scholarship program opened on October 6 and will remain available until January 31. The scholarship, valued at up to $4,000, targets Pennsylvania high school seniors graduating before September 1, 2026, as well as post-secondary students enrolled in accredited aviation-related programs who have not yet earned a bachelor’s degree. Awardees may use the funds to support continuing education at an accredited aviation institution or for flight training at a Pennsylvania-based, FAA-approved Part 61 or 141 school. Interested applicants can access the application form at aerium.org/scholarships. Recipients will be announced in April 2026.
Glenn Ponas, executive director of Aerium, emphasized the program’s potential during the Aerium Fall Summit 2025 in Johnstown, coinciding with the Aviation Council of Pennsylvania’s 45th annual conference, stating, “This program turns innovation into opportunity.”
PitchSummit 2026: Fostering Aviation Entrepreneurship
Complementing the scholarship, Aerium is launching PitchSummit 2026, a new entrepreneurship contest aimed at Pennsylvania high school and college students with original ideas that could advance the aviation and unmanned aircraft sectors. The competition offers more than $20,000 in cash and services to assist young innovators in developing their concepts into prototypes. Applications open on October 31 and must be submitted by February 15. Eligible participants include current students and recent graduates from 2024 onward. Finalists will present their projects at the Aerium Spring Summit on May 28, 2026, in Johnstown. The contest is supported by Aerium, the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, and Ben Franklin Technology Partners.
Opportunities and Challenges Ahead
While these programs provide valuable opportunities, organizers recognize challenges such as securing adequate funding and attracting a diverse range of applicants. The increasing interest in aviation and entrepreneurship among students may intensify competition for scholarships and contest placements. Furthermore, other educational institutions might introduce similar initiatives, heightening the contest for top student talent throughout Pennsylvania.
Despite these hurdles, Aerium and its partners remain dedicated to broadening access to resources, mentorship, and industry exposure for aspiring aviators and entrepreneurs. Through these efforts, they aim to reinforce Pennsylvania’s leadership in aviation technology education and innovation.
