BAESL Establishes Beijing Facility with Goal to Overhaul 250 Plane Engines Annually by 2034

BAESL Establishes Beijing Facility to Transform Aero Engine Maintenance
Beijing Aero Engine Services Co (BAESL), a joint venture between Air China and Rolls-Royce, officially opened its new maintenance facility in Beijing on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in Sino-British aerospace cooperation. At the inauguration ceremony, the Civil Aviation Administration of China granted BAESL its maintenance organization certificate, authorizing the company to provide professional overhaul services for Rolls-Royce’s high-thrust Trent series aero engines.
This development represents a major advancement for China’s high-end aviation engine maintenance industry. BAESL aims to overhaul 250 engines annually by 2034, with a phased increase in capacity beginning in 2026. The facility will initially focus on mainstream Trent models, including the Trent 700, Trent XWB-84, and Trent 1000. As one of only four joint venture maintenance centers within Rolls-Royce’s global network, BAESL is strategically positioned to integrate into the international aviation maintenance market and elevate service standards within China’s civil aviation sector.
Paul Keenan, director of Commercial Aviation Aftermarket Operations at Rolls-Royce, described BAESL as more than a new maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility. He highlighted its significance as the first Rolls-Royce MRO joint venture on the Chinese mainland and a key component in strengthening the global Trent services network. Keenan underscored Rolls-Royce’s enduring commitment to supporting Chinese customers with world-class capabilities.
China represents Rolls-Royce’s third-largest single-country market, with the company’s engines powering over 500 commercial aircraft operated by Chinese airlines. Deliveries of Trent series engines to China account for approximately 20 percent of the global total. Keith Goldfinch, BAESL’s deputy general manager, emphasized China’s advanced manufacturing sector and the substantial opportunities it presents for aerospace companies operating in the region.
Competitive Landscape and Strategic Location
BAESL’s ambitious overhaul targets come amid intensifying competition in the global engine maintenance market. Established industry players such as GE Aerospace have recently expanded their maintenance capabilities, exemplified by the opening of a $50 million On Wing Support facility in Dubai servicing GE9X and CFM Leap-1 engines. These developments underscore the competitive environment BAESL faces, with market analysts closely observing whether the Beijing facility can achieve its objectives as rivals enhance their technological leadership and regional presence, particularly in Asia.
The BAESL facility is situated within the Beijing Capital International Airport Economic Zone, a prominent aviation hub that hosts over 240 aviation service enterprises, including Airbus China. This zone has emerged as China’s largest and most diverse aviation services cluster, leveraging the presence of major industry players such as AMECO to foster innovation and competitiveness in aviation maintenance.
With its formal launch, BAESL is expected to significantly enhance the capacity and core competitiveness of China’s regional aviation industry. The facility is poised to inject new momentum into the development of high-end aviation services, while its progress will be closely monitored as an indicator of China’s broader ambitions in the aerospace maintenance sector amid evolving global market dynamics.
