Bombardier Anticipates Expanded Role for Defense Unit by Year-End
Accelerated Military Jet Deliveries and Defense Expansion
Bombardier is preparing for a significant expansion of its defense unit’s role by the end of 2023, with plans to deliver a double-digit number of military-configured business jets in the fourth quarter. The Canadian aerospace manufacturer has already delivered four modified aircraft during the first nine months of the year, including the ninth E-11A—derived from the Global 6000 platform—to the US Air Force. The company expects this pace to accelerate substantially in the final quarter.
Chief Executive Eric Martel highlighted the anticipated surge during the company’s nine-month results presentation on November 6, emphasizing the defense division’s steady growth and its focus on defense and special-mission applications. Bombardier supplies airframes for several key surveillance platforms, such as Saab’s GlobalEye and the Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC)-developed HADES jets for the US Army, underscoring its strategic role in military aviation.
Strengthening Infrastructure and Service Commitments
Bombardier is also expanding its Wichita facility, which now encompasses significant maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities alongside defense operations. The company recently secured a 10-year service agreement to support Bombardier Global 6500 aircraft equipped with SNC’s RAPCON-X technology for a US military client, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the defense sector.
Chief Financial Officer Bart Demosky noted that a substantial number of defense aircraft, particularly Global 6500s, are scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter. Alongside these military deliveries, Bombardier plans to ship a large volume of Global 7500 business jets and deliver the first Global 8000, which received Transport Canada certification on November 5. The Global 8000 recently set a new business jet speed record at Mach 0.95, highlighting Bombardier’s continued innovation in the business aviation market.
Production Outlook and Supply Chain Management
The fourth quarter is expected to represent approximately 40% of Bombardier’s total annual deliveries. By the end of September, the company had shipped 93 aircraft—46 medium jets and 47 large jets—toward a full-year target exceeding 150 deliveries. With demand remaining robust, Bombardier is assessing the possibility of increasing production rates for certain programs beyond 2026. Martel cautioned, however, that an excessive backlog could pose challenges, as some orders are now scheduled for delivery as far out as 2028 or 2029. He stressed that the company will maintain strict discipline and will only raise output if the supply chain can reliably support it, with any production increases unlikely before 2028 due to ongoing supply constraints.
Supplier performance has improved markedly, with parts shortages now at manageable levels. Demosky remarked that, for the first time in several years, the company is experiencing a normal volume of late parts. Although engine availability remains a critical factor, Bombardier has secured all the powerplants necessary for its fourth-quarter deliveries.
Since refocusing exclusively on business jets following the divestiture of its aerostructures and regional aircraft divisions, Bombardier has positioned itself for growth in both defense and business aviation. The company continues to leverage its expanding product portfolio and strong backlog to capitalize on market opportunities.
