Dassault and Harmattan AI to Advance Artificial Intelligence in French Combat Aviation

Dassault and Harmattan AI Forge Strategic Partnership to Advance Artificial Intelligence in French Combat Aviation
Dassault Aviation and Harmattan AI have announced a strategic partnership designed to accelerate the integration of controlled autonomy and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into French combat aviation systems. Unveiled on 12 January, the collaboration positions Dassault Aviation as the lead investor in Harmattan AI’s USD 200 million Series B funding round, highlighting the increasing significance of AI in defense.
Advancing AI in Combat Aviation
Founded in 2024 to develop autonomy and mission-system software, Harmattan AI has rapidly established itself as a key player in the defense technology sector. The company’s capabilities were prominently displayed at the Paris Air Show 2025, where the Dassault Unmanned Combat Air System (UCAS) demonstrated remote operation from the cockpit of the F5-standard Rafale using AI technology. This demonstration underscored the potential for AI to enhance operational effectiveness and pilot control in future combat scenarios.
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the partnership, describing it as “a vital partnership with Dassault Aviation” and noting that the major fundraising round has elevated Harmattan AI to the status of a new French unicorn. Macron emphasized the deal’s importance for France’s strategic autonomy, the technological edge of its armed forces in AI-enabled defense drones, and its positive impact on the national economy.
Eric Trappier, chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation, stressed that the partnership will support the development of embedded AI capabilities within Dassault’s forthcoming air combat systems. A key focus will be advancing manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) between the Rafale F5, expected to enter service in 2030, and the UCAS. Harmattan AI has already secured multiple programs of record from the French and UK defense ministries for its autonomous systems portfolio and is now expanding operations globally to meet growing demand.
Challenges and Market Implications
Despite the promising outlook, Dassault and Harmattan AI face significant challenges. Integrating AI into complex combat aviation platforms involves overcoming substantial technical hurdles and navigating rigorous regulatory approval processes. Additionally, realizing the full potential of the partnership will require sustained and considerable investment.
Market reactions to the announcement have been largely positive. Analysts recognize the partnership’s potential to reinforce France’s leadership in defense technology and anticipate that it will encourage competitors to increase their own investments in AI and pursue similar collaborations. While the broader AI market is approached with cautious optimism—amid concerns over U.S. stock market volatility and elevated valuations—experts predict strong growth prospects for companies at the forefront of AI innovation.
According to Dassault, proceeds from the investment round will be allocated to expanding AI-enabled mission deployments across new operational theaters, broadening Harmattan AI’s product offerings into additional domains, and scaling industrial manufacturing of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), drone interception, and electronic warfare platforms.
As this partnership progresses, Dassault and Harmattan AI are positioned to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of AI-enabled combat aviation, thereby reinforcing France’s strategic and technological standing on the global stage.
