Emirates and ENOC Collaborate to Advance Sustainable Aviation Fuel Initiatives in Dubai
Emirates Airlines and the Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC), a government-owned energy group based in Dubai, have formalized a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at expanding the supply and integration of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at Emirates’ primary hub in Dubai. The agreement was signed by Adel Al Redha, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Operating Officer, alongside Hussain Sultan Lootah, Acting CEO of ENOC Group, during the recent Dubai Airshow.
Strategic Focus on SAF Supply Chain and Local Production
The MoU outlines a collaborative framework for both entities to explore opportunities to enhance the SAF supply chain infrastructure, develop local production capabilities, and evaluate the commercial viability of SAF within the region. A joint steering committee will oversee ENOC’s assessment of its potential role in producing SAF locally, reflecting the increasing urgency to establish economically sustainable and reliable SAF supply chains in the Middle East.
Adel Al Redha emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that Emirates is committed to integrating sustainable aviation fuels into its operations. He highlighted that securing a dependable SAF supply at the Dubai hub remains a strategic priority, and this collaboration will enable the airline to identify the most feasible pathways for SAF adoption.
Hussain Sultan Lootah underscored ENOC’s commitment to supporting the UAE’s sustainability goals, particularly the national target of supplying 1% of jet fuel to domestic airlines from locally produced SAF by 2031. He affirmed that ENOC will continue to invest in innovation and strengthen partnerships to develop practical and reliable SAF supply chains aligned with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 ambition.
The Role and Challenges of Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a certified drop-in fuel compatible with existing aircraft engines and airport infrastructure. When used unblended, SAF can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80%. Even when blended with conventional jet fuel at a 50% ratio, SAF significantly lowers emissions, contributing to the aviation sector’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint.
Emirates has already made notable progress in SAF adoption. In January 2023, the airline operated a Boeing 777 with one engine running on 100% SAF. Later, in November 2023, it conducted a demonstration flight of an Airbus A380 using 100% SAF in one of its four engines. During the 2024-25 financial year, Emirates secured 7,519 tonnes of SAF across its network, including at key international airports such as London Heathrow, Oslo, and Singapore.
Despite these advances, widespread SAF adoption faces considerable challenges. The high costs associated with SAF production and distribution could increase operational expenses for Emirates, potentially affecting ticket pricing and profitability. As the UAE prepares to implement a mandatory SAF mandate for airlines, Emirates and other carriers may encounter growing pressure from regulators and stakeholders to accelerate SAF integration while maintaining competitive market positions. This evolving regulatory and commercial environment is likely to prompt other regional airlines to pursue similar sustainability initiatives, intensifying the focus on sustainable fuel solutions across the industry.
The collaboration between Emirates and ENOC represents a pivotal development in Dubai’s pursuit of sustainable aviation. However, its ultimate success will depend on overcoming economic and logistical barriers as the aviation sector transitions toward a lower-carbon future.
