HAL Receives Third GE Engine for Tejas Mk-1A Fighter
Progress Amidst Production Challenges
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has received the third GE-404 engine for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk-1A, marking a significant milestone in the indigenous fighter’s production. The delivery comes as HAL intensifies efforts to scale up manufacturing despite persistent constraints in the engine supply chain. A fourth engine is anticipated by the end of September 2025, with improvements in supply logistics deemed critical to meeting the aircraft’s delivery timelines.
The Tejas Mk-1A program holds strategic importance for India’s national security, as the country seeks to bridge its fighter capability gap relative to regional adversaries Pakistan and China. HAL is under considerable pressure to expedite the induction of the aircraft to bolster the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) operational readiness.
Production Expansion and Supply Chain Collaboration
HAL currently operates two production lines in Bengaluru and has recently inaugurated a third facility in Nashik, which is designed to produce eight aircraft annually. However, output from Nashik is expected to be limited to three or four units this year. To augment production capacity, HAL is collaborating with private-sector partners such as VEM Technologies, Alpha, and Larsen & Toubro, which are responsible for manufacturing key components including the centre fuselage, rear fuselage, and wings respectively. This partnership aims to increase total annual production to 30 aircraft in the near future.
Despite delays in engine deliveries from General Electric (GE), HAL has maintained momentum. According to HAL Chairman and Managing Director DK Sunil, six aircraft have already been completed and are operational. The company targets the production of 12 aircraft this year, rotating the available GE engines for essential test flights. GE has supplied three engines to date and committed to delivering 12 engines within the current financial year.
Strategic Procurement and Program Enhancements
The recent engine deliveries are part of a $716 million (Rs 5,375 crore) contract between HAL and GE Aviation for 99 engines and associated support services. This represents the largest engine procurement in HAL’s history for the LCA program and involves the highest thrust variant of the GE-F404 family, the F404-GE-IN20.
The Tejas Mk-1A incorporates at least 43 enhancements over the earlier Mark-1 version, reflecting HAL’s commitment to improving the aircraft’s operational capabilities. Despite criticism from the IAF regarding delays, the program has secured significant government backing. In early 2021, HAL received Cabinet Committee on Security approval for a Rs 46,898-crore order for 83 Tejas Mk-1A fighters, including 10 trainers, with an original delivery schedule targeting the first aircraft within 36 months of the order.
The ongoing engine deliveries and production scale-up underscore the Tejas Mk-1A’s growing role in strengthening India’s domestic aerospace industry and enhancing the country’s air defense capabilities.
