SalamAir Establishes First Airline Base in Salalah

SalamAir Establishes First Airline Base in Salalah
SalamAir, Oman’s prominent low-cost carrier, is poised to inaugurate the first airline base in Salalah, marking a pivotal development in the airline’s expansion strategy and significantly enhancing direct international connectivity from the Dhofar region. The new base will initially provide direct flights to three international destinations: Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, Chattogram in Bangladesh, and Calicut in India. These services are scheduled to commence at the end of October as part of SalamAir’s Winter 2026 schedule.
Strategic Expansion Amid Growing Demand
This initiative responds to the increasing travel demand during the Khareef season, a peak period for tourism in Salalah. To accommodate the influx of visitors, SalamAir recently augmented its capacity on the Muscat-Salalah route, increasing flights to as many as 15 daily and adding thousands of seats. The airline also introduced special fares for Omani nationals, with one-way tickets starting at OMR 9.99, aiming to promote affordable domestic travel. These measures have contributed to a rise in traveler numbers to Dhofar and have reinforced SalamAir’s role in supporting the region’s tourism and travel sectors.
The establishment of a permanent base in Salalah is expected to extend the airline’s influence beyond the seasonal peak, offering year-round connectivity for both local residents and expatriate communities in Dhofar. SalamAir will operate these Salalah-based services using its modern Airbus A320neo and A321neo fleet. With a current fleet of 18 aircraft, the airline possesses the capacity and operational flexibility to respond effectively to evolving market demands across its network.
Competitive Landscape and Operational Challenges
Despite the promising outlook, SalamAir faces significant challenges as it embarks on this new phase. The airline will enter direct competition with established carriers such as Oman Air, which recently reported record passenger volumes to Salalah. Industry analysts anticipate that competitors may adjust their route offerings and pricing strategies in response to SalamAir’s expansion to protect their market share. Furthermore, SalamAir must navigate complex regulatory frameworks and maintain operational efficiency to ensure sustainable growth in the region.
Market response to SalamAir’s announcement has been predominantly positive, with notable engagement across social media platforms indicating strong public interest. However, recent leadership changes within the airline and its acquisition by Oman Air may influence its competitive positioning and operational priorities in the near term.
As SalamAir advances with the establishment of its Salalah base, the airline aims to solidify its presence within Oman’s aviation sector, providing more convenient direct access to key regional and international destinations while supporting the ongoing development of tourism and travel in the Dhofar region.
